UPDATE 25/11: After the initial leak, CBS made a statement that information speculated by ComingSoon was innacurate. While they offer no further comment, Deadline.com reported that their sources within Discovery’s team have claimed that Yeoh will portray Captain Han Bo of the USS Shenzhou. With filming starting very soon for Discovery, it looks like we’ve got one of the leading roles leaked courtesy of Consulting Producer Nicholas Meyer!
In an Interview with ComingSoon!, Meyer didn’t give much away but said he ‘knew’ that Crouching Tiger and Marco Polo star Michelle Yeoh was on board for Discovery, set to be released internationally in May next year.
Known for her roles in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and portraying Aung San Suu Kyi in The Lady among other roles in film and television, Malaysian born Yeoh would make an excellent addition to the cast and has been a name suggested by fans in several circles since the announcement of the new show.
Though ComingSoon has suggested Yeoh the first to be cast, before departing from his role as showrunner, Bryan Fuller confirmed that all but one main role was picked out; that of the unnamed female Lieutenant Commander lead. If she’s a new addition to the cast, there is a chance that Yeoh is the new face of Star Trek, however it’s unlikely Meyer would so casually name drop the lead to the series so if Yeoh has been cast for a while, it’s more likely we’ll see her in the captains role, or another supporting character.
Unfortunately the Discovery process is more secretive than Garak’s time as a gardener on Romulus, so everything is speculation at this stage based on a very short sentence! But speculation aside, we may finally know someone on the cast! SFC Q2 Members; let us know what you think in the forums!
Star Trek Discovery is set to begin filming this month with the show making it’s debut in May 2017. Q2 members can view Discovery on Netflix with a 24 hour delay to the US-only CBS All Access broadcast.
