With production underway and rehearsals in progress, CBS has announced at StarTrek.com that highly respected actor James Frain is not only joining the crew, but starring as father of Spock, Sarek of Vulcan!

Introduced in the original series episode ‘Journey to Babel’, Sarek became one of the franchises most loved regulars. Portrayed originally by the late Mark Lenard, Sarek continued to appear in the original movies, most notably in the Search for Spock, before arriving in The Next Generation. Ben Cross revived the character in the 2009 Star Trek film by JJ Abrams offering a more sombre element to the wise Vulcan ambassador, carrying on Lenards legacy in the new Kelvin timeline.

Now the third man to take the role, Frain is a familiar face to both British and American audiences having appeard in Elizabeth, Prime Suspect, Flash Forward and more recently as Brannis on Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Ferdinand on the clone-based sci fi drama Orphan Black.

Frain joins previously announced cast members Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp, Doug Jones, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo and the new lead Sonequa Martin-Green.

Discovery begins filming this month and is set to launch on Netflix in the UK this May!
