A few months ago eagle eyed fans spotted that the Directors Guild of Canada added a page for a new show with an ominous title, Strange New Worlds. An obvious reference to, well, the obvious, it was presumed that this new show would be a continuation of Captain Pike’s Enterprise crew.
Announced through EW, it’s been confirmed that Strange New Worlds is the next in line for Star Trek’s production and one of the two live action shows hinted at by Alex Kurtzman earlier this year. Strange NEw Worlds will see Ansom Mount return as Captain Pike alongside Rebecca Romjin as Number One and Ethan Peck as Lieutenant Spock.
“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic character,” said Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming, CBS All Access. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek.”
Anson Mount’s Captain Pike was last seen on UK screens venturing into the unknown following the dramatic conclusion of Discovery Season 2, with Spock by his side after returning to duty. Three Short Trek Episodes also featured the crew, however they are yet to be officially released to the European market.
Debunking one of the most prominent rumours sourced from unrepeatable sites, EW reports:
The studio says “Strange New Worlds will follow the crew in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy.” The title and timeline suggest the series might be more of a throwback to episodic planet-of-the-week storytelling of The Original Series (Discovery and the studio’s other new series in the franchise, Star Trek: Picard, are far more serialized in their approach).
With productions across the world in lock-down, there’s no date set and no idea when production can begin. However, pre production has already been noted to be well underway through the Guild website. Plus, these guys merrily confirmed it. I think we can trust them!

However long it takes to see Pike re-take the Captains Chair, we’ll have plenty of Star Trek to get us there! Star Trek Discovery’s 3rd season is currently in post production, drawn out due to the pandemic effecting production, while Lower Decks has continued through remote voice recording and animation and should hopefully retain it’s target.
Section 31, initially scheduled to be filming right now, is still scheduled under show-runners Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt while the pre-teen Nickelodeon show (presumed to be titled Prodigy) is also in production.
