Discovery to End With Season 5

It’s the end of an era as the show that launched the current era of Star Trek and allowed for the franchise to explore boths trange new worlds and beloved characters is coming to an end as Paramount announces the fifth season of Discovery will be it’s last.

In a surprise announcement to industry press and across all of Star Trek’s social media channels, Executive Producers Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman have confirmed that Discovery’s fifth season will be it’s final. Having launched in 2017, Discovery began as the story of Michael Burnham, a disgraced and expelled officer who finds herself on a path of self discovery after being recruited to a mysterious experimental ship where the Captain aims to turn a revolutionary drive into a weapon and a way home…

Since it’s inception the show’s success has launched a new era of the Star Trek franchise including spin off Strange New Worlds focusing on Captain Pike and Spock’s time on the Enterprise following their apeparance in Discovery’s second season, and propelled itself beyond any other era of Star Trek by taking Discovery to the 32nd century to offer hope and healing to a fractured future.

Now firmly set within that new era coming off a successful fourth season, and with the fifth mostly complete, the announcement prompted comments and thoughts from the cast, including lead star Sonequa Martin Green;

“I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with Star Trek: Discovery is ending,” Martin-Green, who’s also a producer, says. “I’m astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew, and remarkable writing team.

I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of Trek with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans. The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek and an entire entertainment platform, and we’ll never forget it. Sixty-five episodes later, here’s to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery, to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Let’s fly… ”

Praised and awarded for it’s diversity and storeytelling, Discovery wasn’t universally loved but was the launching pad for the streaming service that’s now Paramount Plus and became such a hit that CBS/Paramount were committed to investing more in the franchise. It’s early finish did come as a surprise as part of Paramount’s spending cuts on streaming. However with most streaming shows struggling to get past a third season, Discovery may feel like it ended too soon, but has fared better than most on the format.

In the fifth, and now final season of Discovery, the crew will be tasked with a treasure hunt. When an ancient power that’s been deliberatly hidden for century’s becomes known, Captain Burnham leads Discovery in a race across the galaxy to prevent less ethical forces to capture that knowledge. Starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones and

Originally set to launch this Summer, the cast and crew will reunite for a new ending for the fifth season which will offer more closure to the show. The new launch date has therefore been pushed back to 2024.

Season 1-4 are currently available on Paramount Plus alongside Strange New Worlds and Prodigy. Star Trek Picard’s final season is currently streaming on both Paramount Plus and Amazon Prime.
