After some delay the team behind Discovery excited us all with a sneak peek of the show’s first week of production, but the delay to begin filming caused another delay to the shows release, leaving us to question when we’ll see Discovery.
While actor Doug Jones, who will portray an all-new alien science officer called Saru, speculated that the show could potentially launch during the franchises anniversary month in September, CBS executives were cautious about giving another solid release date with their philosophy boiling down to “it’s done when it’s done”, emphasising that they want to get it right first time and not rush any of the vital post production work.
However now we’re closer to figuring out when Discovery will finally hit our screens thanks to CBS’s Chairman and CEO, Les Moonves, who addressed the shows launch at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.
‘Star Trek’ is going to come sometime later in the year; late summer, early fall, we’re looking at, probably, right now.
The good news about All Access is that it’s important to get it right. Star Trek is the family jewels, we’re not going to rush it in a lot of post-production but I’m very confident in what I’ve seen so far. We’re full into production. I’ve seen a little bit of it, and I’m very excited.
-Les Moonves, CEO & Chairman of CBS Network
In the webcast, which can be viewed at the link above, you can hear more from Moonves as he praised the new Star Trek show as the perfect choice for their All Access platform, as well as Netflix as their international distributor, citing that the previous Trek shows have all done “really well” on Netflix. “That gave us great confidence that this was the right show to really hit the full-court press on All Access.” Moonves confidently added in the address.
With a rough release date, and a limited peek behind the scenes thanks to the official promo and leaked images on instagram, all thats left for us
to do is try and figure out what the shows going be about! With a lot of speculation that Discovery is all about war and espionage, Discovery writer Nick Meyer gave insight into what he wants from the show, and the franchise, in an interview with TrekMovie.
“I hope it perpetuates the Star Trek condition of helping people see themselves, making us able to contemplate dilemmas that otherwise we might be too close to judge without prejudice.” Meyer told Trekmovie, “I thought that was the series strength – by taking hot button issues, renaming them and setting them someplace else, that we could think about ourselves and how we want to be. I hope the new series contributes to that tradition, that would be a good thing.”

While the new release date is set to be confirmed, fans in the UK will be able to watch the show exclusively on Netflix alongside all other Star Trek shows from the remastered original series onwards.
