Every quarter we’ll be putting a division of Quadrant 2 under the spotlight as we Tour The Galaxy with the best and brightest of the fleet. And to start off on a high, we thought we’d begin with one of our fastest developing groups in the past decade; the USS Tesla!

The first unit to launch following our mass fleet reorganisation a decade ago, the USS Tesla was first proposed as an idea in passing conversation and soon blossomed into one of the leading groups in both Q2 and in Scotland.

Coming in with established roots in the sci fi community, founding members of Tesla were already well known in fan circles thanks to their association and membership with the UK Colonial Marines and diverse involvement at events in Scotland and beyond. Spearheaded by Fraser who stands as CO of the group, Tesla’s success is in large part down to being a group effort with core officers c coming together to organise and plan events, coordination and more including constructing and building display pieces for their regular table duties.

In recent years Tesla’s become an established presence at large events across Scotland and have become a regular feature at Capital Sci Fi in Edinburgh and Fan Frontiers (formerly ACME) in Glasgow; two of the largest home grown conventions in the country. Presenting a casual and friendly group, each event see’s the crew talk Trek, sci fi in general and showcase Star Trek props – many of which are built by Tesla members – while welcoming any who want to become a part of the crew on board with open arms.

Regular away missions outwith big events are also scheduled for trips event days out with trips ranging from visits to the National Museum of Scotland to retro gaming cafe’s and crossover meetings with other fan groups to bring the whole community together!

Outwith events the crew keep regular communications open, primarily through a very busy Whatsapp chat group with a few more specialised groups in orbit covering specialist interests such as 3D Printing or event planning.

As a group that embraces fun over formality, Tesla’s airlock is open to any and all who want to join the fun and frolics of a laid back and relaxing time meeting fellow fans, sci fi enthusiasts or just people who like to wear skants!

Tesla started 2402 (well, 2025 in our calendar!) in style hosting tables at Capital Sci Fi in February and Fan Frontiers in March and are already scheduling more away missions including September’s Fan Frontiers return in Glasgow.

Having launched in 2018, Tesla was named the Fleet Flagship in 2020 and has evolved in leaps and bounds since then, attracting the highest intake of new members, spreading the welcoming message of Starfleet and generally bringing a lot of fun to the fan world!

You can find out more about the Tesla and how to beam aboard directly at SFCQ2.com/Tesla.

[Retro Review] Scorpion; Voyager S3E26 & S4E01

There's not a Star Trek show that hasn't been put on a pedestal or picked as the definitive of the franchise for it's overall perfection. Though in reality, few few have been great from the word go. From the shaky grounds of the Next Generation's early years to awaiting Sisko finding his beard, most branches of the Star Trek tree have felt like an experiment until they find that one piece of the puzzle that was missing. For Voyager, that piece of the puzzle was Scorpion. Fresh off their reinvention in First Contact, the Borg are still known as one of the Federations biggest threats; a near unstoppable hive mind void of compassion or emotion as they adsorb entire cultures into their shared collective; a deadly cybernetic virus wiping out individuality to serve their single minded purpose of expansion. As […]

[Ships Of The Line] The NEw Orleans

One of the first multi purpose vessels built for the mid 24th century refresh of Starfleet, the New Orleans was the most adaptable model within the larger Galaxy family of starship design. With a trio of mission specific sensor pods, the ship was perfect for short term research missions as a primary objective whilst being able to swap out the pods for more specific purposes or even as defensive units. Smaller than the 'heads of the table' Galaxy and Nebula classes, the New Orleans was the more traditional design in the mid-scale models similar to the Cheyenne and Springfield Classes. Hosting a crew averaging 500, the ship was tightly packed with mixed crew quarters and multi-purpose research facilities to accommodate for the far-ranging tasks it would be assigned to, whether it was planetary defence or survey operations. With modernised nacelles […]

[Ships Of The Line] The Nova (& Rhode Island) Class

One of the more popular starship designs to come out of the mid-late 24th century, the Nova and it's sub class the Rhode Island, had an unusual history. Initially drafted as one of many designs conceptualised following early encounters with the Borg, it's origins lay in defensive planning before it was finalised for a more scientific role in favour of other defensive options for the fleet. Designed for combat initially, the Nova Class was one of many styles designed to be small, compact and manoeuvrable that could be built up in large numbers to bolster the fleeds defence in times of crisis. Like many starship designs proposed at the time, the ship's concept would be abandoned in favour of the Defiant Class project until a new idea was needed elsewhere. Revived by Starfleet for short term planetary research, the Nova […]

[Inside Trek] Andrew Probert

Building the look of the Star Trek Universe isn't easy. Following a template made by Mat Jeffries, every artist who joins the universe builds on that original work. For one artist, his mission wasn't just to build on what came before, but completely reinvent it all with a new vision that would end up becoming one of the most iconic pieces of Star Trek; The Enterprise-D bridge. A graduate of Pasadena's Art Centre College of Design, Andrew Probert's screen career began with science fiction. On the recommendation of fellow artist Ralph McQuarrie, Probert would join the team behind the original Battlestar Galactica series, adding his mark to the universe with the Cylon Centurion design which would represent the Cylons and be revisited as an older model in the Ron Moore driven reboot. Entering the Star Trek Universe in 1978, Probert […]

Beta Quarter Plans and Progress..

Since the 50th anniversary of SFC as a whole, we've been on a mission to revitalise and update several elements of Quadrant 2, working on improving services and experience fleet wide for all members. Following some background changes and a lot of work in the Alpha Quarter behind the scenes, we're moving into the next phase with some more visibility in whats coming next! Balancing life and fleet life is always a trial. All too often things can lapse or take time due to finding that right balance; especially as life now is a little more chaotic than it was ten years ago and the things we'd take in our stride tend to take a little bit longer now. That balance has been on my mind a lot in the past year, particularly in how Q2 has changed and grown […]

New Year, New Site!

After months of planning and a few mentions here and there, we're as surprised as anyone that after planning a newly refreshed site for 2025, we made it in time without anything going wrong! Reviewing 2024 we've been plotting, planning and organising in the background ahead of a huge push for 2025 to revive some administrative energy and while a new site may seem like it's last on (very long) a list of priories, a new look to match the energy we wanted to go into 2025 with was a big task to get the ball running.   On the front end, we've kept things roughly the same with only a few minor tweaks. Posts will still be split between two main sections. On Screen will be host to ongoing production news reviews, including the ongoing Retro Review feature and […]
