Retro Review: Way of the Warrior (Comms Highlights)

Whenever you ask a DS9 fan where to start, the answer is rarely from the beginning. The first seasons of the show were good, sometimes great. The foundations were laid for a darker show than the flagship adventures of the Enterprise We had Federation turncoats in the Maquis; an uneasy peace between Bajor and their former oppressors in Cardassia; there was politics and religion crossing over on all fronts and from the end of season two we had the Dominion lurking on the far side of the wormhole teasing their incoming takeover of Federation Space. It was a packed show with a lot of threads running. And then Paramount made a decision. They wanted more Klingons. They hired Michael Dorn to carry Worf over from the Enterprise to DS9. Decisions made above the producers heads forced them to change course, […]

For The Uniform! The Motion Picture Era (Comms Highlights)

Starfleet's wardrobe always seems to change. Different producers and designers always bring something new to the table, whether it's a need to create a more militarised uniform, something nice and simple for a more real-world feel, or sometimes – just sometimes – space pyjamas. Last issue saw us chart the early half of 23rd Century, looking Starfleet style from the era of Robau and George Kirk from the shared-timeline USS Kelvin, to the bold colours of Kirk Jr's time as captain of the Enterprise during the infamous five year mission. Now we continue inspecting the uniforms of Starfleet through the latter half of the 23rd century with the movie era of Trek; And things get a little bit complicated.... THE MOTION PICTURE (2270's) In the 1960s, colour television was all the rage and Star Trek was at the forefront of […]

Michelle Yeoh to Lead New Star Trek Series

It's been known for some time now that, following the success of Discovery and the impact it had on All Access subscriptions, executives at CBS had tasked the creative team to come up with some fresh ideas for more Star Trek content. One of those ideas hinted at as early as November has just been commissioned.... This morning CBS announced that Michelle Yeoh will carry over her Star Trek Discovery character, Phillipa Georgiou, to a new series based around mysterious shadow organisation Section 31. Having appeared in the pilot of Discovery as the ill fated Captain Georgiou, Yeoh reprised the mirror universe version of the role as the Terran Emperor, ending season one in the prime universe after Burnham saved her from a coup, bringing her back when the Discovery crew returned to their own universe. “I’m so excited to […]
