The 44th annual Saturn Awards were presented this week with Discovery entering with five nominations and leaving with two big wins!
Discovery has brought a lot of success for CBS’s new All Access Service with subscriptions rising and the show coming out on top of streaming viewership projections throughout (and in the weeks after!) the shows run. Matching the success of the show, The Saturn Awards gave a nod of recognition with Discovery winning the award for Best New Media Television series.
Up against some impressive competition, including Netflix sci fi’s Stranger Things, Black Mirror and Altered Carbon and their crime drama Mindhunter, as well as Hulu’s The Handmaids Tale and Amazon’s Electric Dreams, Discovery took home the prestigious price with two of it’s Klingon contingent – Mary Chieffo (L’Rell) and Kenneth Mitchell (Kol) – accepting the award on behalf of the crew.
Against similarly stiff competition, Sonequa Martin Green gained an impressive win as she accepted the award for Best Actress on a Television series. Accepting via recorded message – in full Starfleet tactical gear – due to filming commitments, Martin-Green came out on top of an impressive list of candidates including American Horror Story’s Sara Paulson, X Files veteran Gillian Anderson, Game of Thrones’ callous queen, Lena Headey, The Orville’s Adrianne Palicki and Fargo’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Sadly the team were less successful in other nominations as Twin Peak’s twice defeated Discovery with Kyle MacLachlan beating out Jason Isaacs for Best Actor in Television, and David Lynch coming out on top of the Best Guest Performance Category over Michelle Yeoh.
Doug Jones also gained a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Television, however the veteran mask actor lost out to Better Call Saul’s Michael McKean for his performance in the impressive Breaking Bad prequel. However, we’ll take that as a slight win for Trek as McKean’s performance in Voyager’s The Thaw still remains a favourite for many Trek fans!
The night wasn’t over for Jones however as The Shape of Water, in which he has a leading role, picked up the win for Best Fantasy Film.
Star Trek stars from other corners of the galaxy also gained wins over the evening with Sir Patrick Stewart was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role as Charles Xavier in Logan; a category that saw his fellow Enterprise Captain, Chris Pine, nominated for his part in Wonder Woman.
DS9 producer Ronald D Moore also sawgood fortune as his current show, Outlander, picked up the win for best Fantasy Television Series while Star Trek Beyond make up artist Joel Harlow won the Best Film Makeup award for Black Panther; an award was presented to him by Discovery’s Chieffo and Mitchell.
There could be more wins to come soon for Discovery with the show in line for several Emmy Awards with nominee’s to be announced in July.

Last week Starfleet Academy debuted and something odd happened. If you're a regular to any Trek news or discussion site, you noticed a spike. Even our usually sleepy Facebook profile went from a handful of likes to over 2,000, am good chunk of which got deleted. It wasn't a normal spike, certainly not normal for a debut show, not normal to be everywhere and – to be frank – not normal in terms of comments. It was a mix of disturbing and sad. Starfleet Academy Welcomes It’s First Class!

Looking ahead to the next generation of Star Trek shows, Paramount and Secret Hideout have already began announcing new cast members to lead the Starfleet Academy series coming to the streaming platform in the near future. News of the show has already turned heads with notes that the new academy campus will be the largest seen on TV so far, being filmed in Pinewood';s largest stage in Canada, though in terms of what to fully expect from the young adult drama, things are largely being kept under Red Directive secrecy. Trapped between two black holes, the doorway to the Progenitor's legacy is wide open. Discovery's on guarding duty following Burnham chasing Moll inside while the Breen are recovering to take the technology for themselves before a rival faction finds them. With everything to fight for and the chase becoming a race against time, Discovery's crew enter their final house and a bit to end their five season journey.
