According to a breaking report from EW, it seems that Star Trek Discovery has found it’s ‘Number One’ star.
Known for her role as Sasha Williams on AMC’s The Walking Dead, Sonequa Martin-Green has reportedly been cast to take the lead role on the new Trek TV show set to debut in May next year.
Martin-Green’s casting brings a close to a long and determined search to find the perfect lead for Discovery which has partially caused delays to the process of building the show. Bryan Fuller, who stepped down as showrunner earlier this year after constructing much of the shows history, told fans at Comic Con that he wanted to cast a non-white woman in the lead role, in part inspired by the iconic role Nichelle Nichols had in the original series and for Mae Jamieson, the first the first African-American woman to launch into space.
Although we don’t yet have a name for the character, Martin-Green’s lead for Discovery will break the routine for the Trek franchise as the show won’t focus on the captain, but instead a Lieutenant Commander who’s exploring her place in the universe and how to understand the strange new worlds ahead of her.
Bringing a lot of experience to the role, Martin-Green has appeared in Once Upon a Time, The Good Wife, NYC 22 and Army Wives among other credits and will continue to serve as a series regular on AMC’s The Walking Dead.
Martin-Green joins previously announced cast members Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp, Doug Jones, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif and Mary Chieffo. Discovery is now scheduled to begin filming from February 2017 to be broadcast on Netflix in the UK from May.

Last week Starfleet Academy debuted and something odd happened. If you're a regular to any Trek news or discussion site, you noticed a spike. Even our usually sleepy Facebook profile went from a handful of likes to over 2,000, am good chunk of which got deleted. Starfleet Academy Welcomes It’s First Class!

Looking ahead to the next generation of Star Trek shows, Paramount and Secret Hideout have already began announcing new cast members to lead the Starfleet Academy series coming to the streaming platform in the near future. Discovery's on guarding duty following Burnham chasing Moll inside while the Breen are recovering to take the technology for themselves before a rival faction finds them.
