Starfleet Academy Series Announced

Article arrow_drop_down

An idea teased and thrown around for decades will finally come to life as Paramount+ confirmed the next venture of Star Trek. As Picard and Discovery come to an end, we’ll see a new brand of hero come to the forefront in Starfleet Academy in the near future.

The concept of runbning a show based around Starfleet Academy has been thrown around for years. It’s not a secret that the sixth Star Trek film was based on the idea, with concept art widely available showing what a young Kirk and Spock might have looked like. The original idea was to have an old Dr McCoy tell the tale of how the infamous crew first met, all at the Academy and finding themselve sin control of an earlier iteration of the Enterprise. Of course, that was binned for a film where the crew would visibly and narratively play on their age while the 2009 revival would see alternate versions of the characters meet in a similar fashion following interference from the future.

The idea of an Academy series has always been at the forefront of popular concepts yet only lightly been touched on with that 2009 film, the odd episode such as The First Duty in Next Generation showing Wesleys classmates and DS9’s Valiant that followed a group of cadets who’s taken over their ship and went to war with the Dominion. But the closest we’ve had so far has been Prodigy, where a group of civilian youngsters find a starship and become the protoge’s of a holographic version of former Voyager Captain Janeway.

However it seems now is the time to see the idea come to life fully as Paramount offered the following announcement….

“We are excited to introduce ‘Star Trek’ fans to a whole new generation of Starfleet officers in training as they navigate the rigors of the Academy and the brink of adulthood in STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY,” said Domenic DiMeglio, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Data, Paramount Streaming. “Introducing new characters and compelling storylines, this all-new original series will serve as a fantastic addition to the franchise and Paramount+, bringing new generations of viewers and long-term ‘Star Trek’ fans alike together to enjoy the next chapter in the iconic ‘Star Trek’ universe.”

“As we continue to explore more of the ‘Star Trek’ universe, we’re thrilled to bring STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY to fans around the world as the next chapter in this expanding franchise,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Studios. “Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau’s vision is a smart and thrilling take that celebrates the core principles of what ‘Star Trek’ has always stood for, but through the eyes of the next generation of Starfleet’s leaders.”

Set to beging production in 2024, Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau will serve as co-showrunners and will executive produce the series alongside executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber. The series premiere episode is written by Gaia Violo. STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY will be produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

Though little informastion was gfiven alongside the announcement as to the shows concept and where it fits into the overall timeline, it would be logical to safely assume the show will continue the 32nd century timeline and follow on from Discovery. Especially as the announcement noted “first time in over a hundred years” which would follow seeing as the Academy wouldn’t have been in full swing following the Burn.

During Discovery’s fourth season, Lieutenant Tilly left the ship to work alongside Kovich to help rebuild the academy withone episode focusing on her leading a group of cadets. Much like tyhe two parter that said goodbye to Georgiou the previous season, the cadet mission did also feel like ait was hinting at another spin off, even if Michelle Yeoh’s was pushed back to make room for Strange New Worlds.

The idea of pushing an Academy show focused on rebuilding as well as learning to become an officer does offer more possibilities than continuing with the 25th century, or even joining Strange New Worlds in the 23rd. Though as of yet nothings been confirmed as to when the show will take place and as of now, there are several shows all at different points of the timeline.

We’ll likely know more in the coming months ahead of the production beginning in 2024.

Welcoming Our New Fleet Development Officer

To quote Heraclitus, the only constant in life is change. Quadrant 2 has been through many changes before and with the recent appointment of a new Admiralty Board, we're looking ahead with more changes to the fleet structure. With Piers Drinkall joining the board alongside David Shires, there were some discussions about what to do with Piers' Fleet Development role and after some serious thinking, a decision was made. After aiding in Piers' efforts within the Command Training Program, and being a solid right hand on the USS Sovereign, we're pleased to welcome Karl Drinkall to the Fleet Development position. Karl is a sharp mind with a lot to give to the fleet and a clear grasp of our aims and goals in the coming months and years. With his dedication and string mindset, it was an easy decision to […]

[Retro Review] Errand of Mercy

Relations between the Federation and the Klingons are in tatters and the prospect of an all out war casts a shadow over the region. To help prepare for the worst, Kirk and the Enterprise are sent to Organia, a planet populated by inherent pushovers right on the border between Federation and Klingon space. With the prospect of the Klingons getting a foothold that would help their war efforts, Kirk's job is to negotiate a protection order, getting the Organians on their side before the Klingons annexe the planet as a launching pad for conflict. Problem is, the Organians are hardcore pacifists and their native tech is limited. They don't want to be part of any war, and they don't want to change their values to resist. Which becomes a bit of a problem when the Klingons arrive ready to occupy the […]

Dude, Where’s Your Shuttle? Human Best Friend; Strange New Worlds S4E03

It's been a stressful few months for the Enterprise crew and they want, well, demand, shore leave. Choosing a tech-free planet with natural psychedelics in the atmosphere, the command crew take a shuttle down, take in all the wonders the world provides. And then it all goes a bit wonky... Writers: Kathryn LynDirector: Yana Gorskaya Engineers and pilots hate each other. It's the rules. Scotty and Ortegas have been following those rules to the letter, with the bickering pair opening with a dual monologue highlighting how irritating they are to each other between Scotty setting up alerts and alarms to keep the engines in check, and Ortegas duct tapping over the console to get rid of them so she can push the limits freely. While they're constantly irritating each other, the rest of the Alpha shift command team are exhausted. Admirals Blog: Gamma Quarter 2403

To say it’s been a sad few weeks for Q2 would be an understatement. There have been fewer constants than Mark Mitchell within the past, Gods knows how many years. The rulebooks? Thats him. Academy? Thats all Mark. Sure, things got updated and edited over the years, but he’s been the backbone of the fleet for as long as I remember. Mainly as I remember him making my Academy exam when I joined the fleet on a whim. It’s because of people like Mark that I stayed. The fleet has always been the people. And he was one of the best people. I was honoured and humbled by the amount of people who went to say their goodbyes to him and while I felt a real sense of loss, it was also a day filled with joyful memories. When it […]

A Fistful of Down To Earth Adventures

Warping through the stars always searching for the next adventure, it's rare that Star Trek ever comes home to Earth. Through all the series, and highlighted in Enterprise, the third rock from our sun is kinda important in the grand scheme of things but our eyes are always far beyond the stars. So for no particular reason at all - certainly not any recent new series launching - we're taking a look at Trek's more Earthbound moments.... Homefront/Paradise Lost Deep Space Nine Season 4 The Founders said they were everywhere. Now we know they're on Earth. Recordings revealed a founder during the bombing of a Federation meeting on the home-world and Sisko is recalled. His knowledge and experience with the Dominion is vital to securing Earth against the inevitable war. But while the Dominion may be the enemy, they aren't […]

Some Scary Ship! The Griffin Incident; Strange New Worlds S4E02

Returning from a conference for future leaders of Starfleet, Spock and La'an (with Kirk hitching a ride) find a long-lost ship adrift. The USS Griffin's disappearance nine years prior had never been explained, becoming a bit of folklore within the fleet. Stum, bling upon it by chance, the trio board the ship hoping to find an answer to the mystery only to get more than they bargained for... Writers: Robbie Thompson Director: Axelle Carolyn   I'll preface this now by pointing out I love creepy sci fi settings.. The isolation of being trapped on a derelict ship with no escape and no one to call for help has always been something I've enjoyed from the obvious Event Horizon, even to old classics like The Thing. So I was excited for this one by the trailer alone and can't say I was disappointed! […]

Paul Giamatti joins Holly Hunter for Starfleet Academy!

Looking ahead to the next generation of Star Trek shows, Paramount and Secret Hideout have already began announcing new cast members to lead the Starfleet Academy series coming to the streaming platform in the near future. News of the show has already turned heads with notes that the new academy campus will be the largest seen on TV so far, being filmed in Pinewood';s largest stage in Canada, though in terms of what to fully expect from the young adult drama, things are largely being kept under Red Directive secrecy. However we now at least know who will be leading the new class ahead of the shows production...

JJ Abrams Announces A Return To The Kelvin Timeline

Way back in 2016 during Star Trek Beyond's red carpet premiere in London, JJ Abrams confirmed there'd be a follow up to the Kelvin Timeline's Enterprise crew with expectations on Beyond being quite high. Despite it being one of the few earners that year for Paramount, it didn't quite meet financial expectations for it's budget.
