As essential tool in the world of Starfleet, the tricorder is a multi-functional handheld instrument used to scan, analyse and record data to aid in a number of tasks or duties. Another of the iconic pieces of equipment in the Star Trek Universe, the compact tricorder would come in many forms over the years as an all in one tool for data gathering and analyse whether you were trying to understand your surroundings on an alien world or in need of a guided breakdown of pats during a tricky repair.
Originally designed by artist and designer Wah Chang, the Tricorder was first introduced in Star Trek’s debut episode The Man Trap and has been a staple of Starfleet tech ever since. The original was a boxy design with a small display and hidden compartments for full functions. While vague in overall function, the tricorder could detect life signs, analyse atmospheres, and identify unknown phenomena, making them portable systems essential for away teams on alien worlds.
While other essential away team gear would change and evolve over the years, such as the communicator moving from handheld, to wrist mounted and eventually to being incorporated into the Starfleet Delta, the tricorder would remain in use with only cosmetic changes for decades.

Few pieces of tech in science fiction have been as influential or recognisable as Starfleet's communicators. Essential tech for life in Starfleet, handheld communicators were originally used most commonly with landing parties to communicate with both home base and the rest of the team on the ground, or could be used on board a starship or facility while linked in to the on-board communications network.
