Quadrant 2 is free for anyone in the UK, EU (and more!) to join. With a solid base in the UK, we have members from around a dozen other countries including units in France and Japan. One query we often get in our inbox is why don’t we include the countries that have produced Star Trek – the United States and Canada? The answer is simple. We don’t host those members. Quadrant 1 does.

Starfleet Command Quadrant 2. It’s quite the mouthful. If you’re a curious fan wandering by wondering why we opted for a club name that had that many syllable, it comes down to our history and how SFC formed and evolved over the years. Originating in 1974, Starfleet Command began in the United States, an idea by fans that quickly gained the support of creator Gene Roddenberry himself. Over the years and decades the club would expand, grow, change and even have offshoots spring up from it’s base.

That growth also happened in across Europe. With it’s central command remaining in the United States, the clubs mission attracted new members from all over the world. As the UK expanded, far from the clubs originating home, the passionate fanbase on our side of the water needed it’s own expansion. It became obvious over time that different structures were needed and the traditional way of doing things largely didn’t apply to very different regions. The needs of the UK-based membership were different and unique and their voices weren’t heard as loudly as they could be being separated from the clubs leadership.

Spearheaded by leadership in the United Kingdom, a decision was made to help give members in UK and Europe a louder voice in their region. One flight and one meeting later and SFC was separated from one global operation into two unique entities. Carrying the same name, mission and lineage, the United States became Quadrant One, while Europe became Quadrant 2. Both with their own missions, goals, and command structures.

Over time each board has led policies and decisions in their respective regions that have worked towards serving their members needs and continued the combined mission on their own unique pathways. As time moved on, and regulatory changes came into play, the benefits of having all UK and European memberships handled and led within local laws, data handling policies has been a successful one. Especially with changes to our structure and operations mirroring and representing our corner of the world.

While Quadrants 1 and 2 are active, the idea inspired a third Quadrant in the 1990’s spanning Australia and Asia. However Q3 is currently inactive and may some day return.

From time to time we still have American sign ups, however with very few exceptions, if we receive a membership from anyone located within the United States, South America or Canada, we won’t process this. Instead, while we’re happy to welcome you to Starfleet Command, we point towards Quadrant One’s direction so they can enjoy being part of the community of fans rather than be isolated from our operation.

While two very different entities in the 2020’s compared to our shared origins more than fifty years ago, and operating independently from one another, Quadrant’s 1 & 2’s connections make for two big fleets connecting one large community.

[Q2&A] The Quadrants of Command

[Retro Review] Dagger Of The Mind

Dropping by a penal colony focused on rehabilitating the criminally insane, the Enterprise beams down some much needed supplies while one of the inmates sneaks on board to beg for asylum. But it's no regular stowaway. Dr Simon Van Gelder used to be part of the staff before he began to lose his mind and he's not just afraid of having dodgy meals and no windows, but reveals to Kirk that the facility runs through torture and abuse. Van Gelder arrived broken. His memories scattered, and any glimpse of those memories would trigger a painful and violent reaction. The colony's lead scientist and essentially warden, Dr Tristan Adams, waves it off claiming Van Gelder's techniques were tested on himself and that the rest of his story was delusional ramblings. Not entirely convinced, and given a heavy nudge by McCoy, Kirk […]

[Treknology] Shields Up! Red Alert!

Different writers, directors and plot points paint Starfleet as multiple and occasionally conflicting things. Both a military and exploratory force, there's many layers to the fleet and how it operates. Handling everything from border defence to mapping unknown territories, even the most mundane mission in peace time can be a risky one. Especially as not every new person you meet will want a cup of tea and a chat, and accidentally dropping into someone's back garden doesn't always go down well.So when the shooting starts, you have to be ready to defend yourself, and in a world of weaponry that could burn an entire planet into ashes, sticking some armour on your hull just isn't going to cut it. One of the most vital systems always ready on stand by, deflector shields help to keep a ship and it's crew […]

Behind the Viewscreen: Gene L Coon

As it's creator, the name Gene Roddenberry is part of the Star Trek legend. But when it came to shaping what the show was, and forming it's foundations, there was another Gene behind the scenes who help build on and refine the shows concepts into the world we know today. Originally brought into the fold in August 1966, Coon was hired to handle day to day production and script revisions during the shows first season, with his first credit appearing on the first seasons eighth episode, Miri. Beyond that day to day production, as well as his creative relationship with Roddenberry, Coon's efforts would help shape the shows identity, helping to form it's unique blend of science fiction, drama and political commentary and in shaping the shows moral compass that would be a keystone of the Star Trek experience. Giving […]

[For The Uniform] Generational Upgrade: 2350’s-2370’s

After solidifying a formal military style with stiff dark reds and heavy duty fabrics through the latter half of the 23rd century, the 'Monster Maroons' defined Starfleet as a more serious, more robust organisation. With minor tweaks the look stayed strong for almost 80 years when suddenly Starfleet decided they needed a dramatic change. It's not uncommon. Starfleet goes through uniforms faster, and in more rapid evolutions than any other organisation in history.Maybe it's because of the constant evolution of the Federation? Bringing in new members, new styles, new sensibilities and adapting to their needs. Maybe the MonsterMaroonians joined the Federation and would only absorb their navies into Starfleet if they adapted to their style, and it took eighty years for another species to come in and make fashion related demands. Maybe a new Admiral became Commander in Chief and […]

[Q2&A] Orientation: The Academy

Joining SFC can be a bit of a whirlwind. With decades of history and developing our own structure and community, it can seem a little overwhelming knowing who's who and where to begin. Everyone starts their time in SFC their own way. Some just dive right in. Some like to know more about us and some prefer a more immersive over casual approach. No matter how you want to make your membership, the Academy will guide you through those first steps... When people think of Academy, they think of it as a testing ground filled with exams, questions and a sort of proving ground to flex your Trek knowledge. Traditionally, thats exactly what Academy was. For a long time members would join, go through Academy and get their first rank reward and assignment once they'd finished the course. A few years […]

[Departmental] Introducing General Board

The General Board is a relatively new concept and the next evolution of Fleet Support. Mirroring the Captains Table, the General Board is constructed to help overall fleet operations and to contribute more voices and ideas to the clubs operation. Based very loosely on the political 'two house' structure, and named after the real-world General Board within the US Navy in the first half of the 20th century, the starting point was to appoint two sets of voices within the fleet. The Captains represent their unit and their members need within that unit, each representing an area or group that makes up the whole. To contrast and add to the Captains Table, Fleet Support – and now the expanded General Board – allows to give both opinions of fleet leadership and fleet membership equal standing and ensure we hear a […]

While we offer our Academy as an induction tour of Quadrant 2's organisation and structure, and are always open to expanding more information in the Fleet Database, our Officers Pack gives you a one stop resource to highlight our core policies, membership information and more; The Membership Handbook/ Membership within Q2 is fairly laid back. [Q2&A] Career Track

SFC has always structured it's internal reward and recognition system on the command structure of Starfleet on screen. Newbies are cadets. When they become full members, they become Ensigns. And those eager to take on a leadership role can rank up to Commander or Captain. Even the board of directors are mirrored within the theme as Commodores and Admirals! It's always been the way, but the path of an officer isn't for everyone... Despite the original idea of all star ship personnel being highly trained astronauts, therefore nullifying the need for enlisted crew, the enlisted ranks have existed in some form since the original series. More defined in the film era, particularly under the revision of style and structure in The Wrath of Khan, they have been slightly more prominent since. Most notable of the enlisted members of Starfleet was […]
