Both the original and Next Generation crew had said their last farewells on the big screen, while on TV Star Trek's eighteen year run had suffered franchise fatigue and low ratings, leading to the cancellation of prequel series Enterprise. Certain that there was still plenty of final frontier to explore, Paramount moved forward with a bold relaunch of the franchise.
