Built as a test bed for a new experimental propulsion system, the Protostar Class is a unique breed of Starship and one of the smallest corvette style ships designed by Starfleet in the 24th century. Following the revelation that warp drive was damaging the fabric of subspace ion 2370, Starfleet enacted several branches of research to find a way to ensure their exploration missions caused no damage to the natural environment.
One of the more unique and memorable ships to emerge from nearly sixty years of Star Trek is the Oberth Class. One of many new models introduced during the original series movie era, the Oberth class first appeared as the Grissom, an ill-fated science ship assigned to study the newly formed Genesis planet only for the crew to find themselves on the wrong side of a Klingon torpedo. Unveiled in The Search for Spock, the Grissom was one of several new designed made for the film and, officially, only the fourth Federation starship design seen on screen. Like many designs from the era of practical effects, the Oberth class model would be re-used over the years giving the class a longevity mirroring the Excelsior and Miranda class ships.
Constructed and designed at the tail end of the 24th century alongside a near complete refresh of Starfleet's forces, the Sagan Class was the first in a n0ew initiative to incorporate technology both inspired and reverse engineered from Borg Technology. The first Sagan Class placed into service was the USS Stargazer, named in honour of Admiral Jean Luc Picard's first command. Much like the original Stargazer, the Sagan Class mirrored the old constitution class in being a quad-nacelles ship with similar design layout.
Undoubtedly the undisputed champion of design longevity, the Miranda Class is one of the strongest holdovers from the 23rd century with a design surviving multiple upgrades and new integrations over the years. Initially designed for scientific missions, as well as being used for border patrol, the Miranda Class was first launched in the 2260's with a streamlined design mirroring the Constitution Class. A simplified saucer with underslung nacelles, the Miranda was also incredibly adaptable. The original variant included a rollbar on top of the rear of the extended saucer with a dual torpedo launcher.
Starfleet ships are designed for exploration. The Defiant is one of very few designed to fight. Introduced in the third season of Deep Space Nine, the prototype Defiant was conceptualised to give Sisko and his crew a weapon to fight against the Dominion with, as well as to open up the wider world of DS9 in something a little heftier than a runabout. Initially planned to ba a larger version of a runabout, producers decided to go big or go home. But, not too big....
Before the age of CGI, Star Trek's art teams relied on models to bring Starfleet to life with the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine keeping the budgets down by re-using movie era designs as the backbone of the fleet. Even during the Dominion War arc where CGI was utilised at times, the fleet was filled with outdated Excelsior and Miranda class starships with the occasional Galazy, Nebula or First contact fleet thrown in thanks to archived digital assets.
