For The Uniform: The First Contact Era, 2373-2380’s

The Borg were on the attack, the Dominion were plotting to overthrow the Federation and the Klingons were on the offensive. Also there was a new feature film with all new design in the works, so it was time for a new change for Starfleet as the bright colours were thrown out and replaced with something more fitting for an era of doom and gloom. Introduced in Star Trek First Contact, the new uniform was an evolution of the previous design initially created for Deep Space Nine's more 'hands on' style. The 'First Contact' uniform was a bit of a departure from what we'd seen in the Next Generation era. The original Star Trek uniforms were designed in an era where colour television was brand spanking new and as such, they were bright, bold and matched the multicoloured mood lights […]

[Q2&A] Simplicity In Structure

As much as the rank and rewards system mirrors the fictionalised naval structure of Starfleet, so so does the Chain of Command. On screen each crew is led by it's Captain while back home they answer to Admirals sendin gout the assignments and supervising the exploration into the unknown. Our unknown is a little less space adventure, but the logic remains the same and has remained one of the most consistent elements of how Q2 operates to this day.

[Retro Review] Schisms; TNG Season 6

Alien abduction isn't exactly an innovative or creative plot device. Long before the X Files became the most popular brand of alien conspiracy in media, we had everything from the memorably dazzling abduction in Close Encounters of the Third Kind to the found footage wonder The McPherson Tape. For Star Trek, however, it's an odd concept to include. Humanity is a space faring species and some of our best pals are aliens. If one crept into your bedroom in the middle of the night and took you on board their ship, that's more of a diplomatic nightmare than a horrific conspiracy. So when it did happen in Next Gen's Schisms it all felt a bit weird and creepy. Mostly in a good way.

[Ships Of The Line] Intrepid Class

One of the most advanced exploration classes upon it's launch, the Intrepid Class was built with new methods of starship design and multiple innovations that advanced upon the construction methods used for the era led by the gargantuan Galaxy Class long term explorer. Built within a significantly smaller scale, the Intrepid was a light explorer built for shorter mission terms than the classic 'five year' exploration tour and served a variety of functions.

[Inside Trek] Michael Westmore

It takes a universe in itself to create Star Trek and part of it's creative family comes from a legacy that far outshines most in film. For over a hundred years the Westmore family have been a staple of productions in Hollywood starting with George Westmore's studio. The family would not only become masters of hair and make up design, but become engrained within Hollywood as the finest in their craft.
