Rebuilding after being torn down by ‘The Burn’, Starfleet and the Federation are getting back on mission, rekindling old alliances, developing new technologies and now ready to re-open Starfleet Academy to raise the next generation of explorers…
Writers: Noga Landau & Jane Maggs
Director: Alex Kurtzman
Whether it’s seeing hios potential, or just sheer guilt, Captain Ake is bending over backwards to integrate Caleb into the Academy. Trouble is, he’s not putting in the same effort. Fighting against his own inflated ego and distracted with his quest to find his mother coming to a dead end. Spiralling following an argument with instructor Jet Reno, Caleb tries to run, but instead he runs into Tarima; a visiting Betazoid who can see right through his bravado.
Following the Burn, Betazed isolated itself from the Federation and now their president has an invitation tot he Academy to see their work and make a show of rejecting Vance’s offer of reconciliation. But the presidents daughter, Tarima herself, finds enough of a bond with Caleb to push for change leading to Betazed rejoining the Federation on the condition that they host the new headquarters.
Coming in after the fast paced adventure of the first episode, this one slows that pace down to focus on ‘the mission’ of rebuilding Starfleet. Vance is pushing early on to have Ake showcase the Academy while the War College – the institution that kept Starfleet’s population running through the harsher times post-Burn – feels the conflict of their strict order and regulations against Ake’s more bohemian style as she shapes the new Starfleet.
Whats more blunt is the message of everyone being stuck in their ways. Betazed voted in a president who’s firm in his isolationist views and only submitting to Vance’s request due to the younger generations pushing for change. Of course it’s all wrapped up in romance and teenage rebellion. Caleb isn’t a model cadet, and is starting to hit Ake’s last nerve already, but his honesty over his situation helps build a story with Tarima who, much like Caleb, is trapped in her own institution, but one thats much less hopeful.
On the small scale, their not so subtle courting leads to a sharing of information. There’s no record of the prison Calebs mother was held within Starfleet records. But Tarima finds it seeing as it’s on their side of the border and Starfleet have been blocked out from staying up to date. A simple message; together we know more. Of course there’s higher stakes involved and it does all lead to the big climax of young love (or lust, perhaps?) revealing that truth just enough to convince Betazed to drop it’s position and for the Federation to finally stop relying on Earth as a base by default.
It wasn’t an exciting or thrilling episode. But it wasn’t bad by any stretch. If the first episode was there to grab our attention, Beta Test was there to tell us what the shows about. Yep, there’s young adult drama. Yep there’s conflict between the Academy and the War college. But beyond what we’d expect form the setting, it firmly established that when Vance said the universe was a mess that needed cleaned up, we see how fractured things have become and where the show intends to go to reset the template in a positive way and shine a light on the importance of everyone coming together.
If the episode left me with anything, the theme of the episode felt like a mission statement. You’ve had your action, and there’ll be more later. But at it’s heart, it’s there to build a positive message and showcase a hopeful future; the same kind of hopeful future previous generations saw. Just this time, we’ll see it built again from the ashes. Which surely, in a world filled with chaos and culture war, is something to feel good about for an hour a week.
EPISODE DISCUSSION & SPOILERS
Highlights
- We see more campus names this week including a long lingering shot on Boothy Memorial Park and the Betaazed conference held in the Uhura Pavilion.
- The unnamed Brikar cadet was wonderful to see in live action following the species debut on Prodigy with Rok-Tahk
- I refuse to believe the broken replicator line wasn't a Red Dwarf reference.
All Connected...
Brought to screen by Anthony Natale, President Emerin Sadal is the second deaf character to appear in Star Trek. The first was Riva in Next Generation episode Loud as a Whisper. Played by Howie Seago, Riva communicated through a chorus of telepathic delegates who each conveyed different aspects of what he wanted to say. Both Natale and Seago are deaf in real life with our new Betazed President making his film debut in the classic Mr Hollands Opus as the older Cole.

Sixty Year Mission…
It's been a really weird year already for the world of Star Trek fans. We started 2026 with a new venture into a strange new future with Starfleet Academy. Then just as the show had won people over, we found out it's the latest in a long list of recent productions to get a cancellation order, is a bit of a weird way to start the 60th anniversary of a legendary franchise. The past few years we've kind of spoiled. Growing up it was exciting to have Deep Space Nine run alongside the Next Generation. In modern times we had multiple shows going at once with Discovery's launch spawning a new world of story telling from revisiting Picard in his post-Starfleet years, to animated comedy with Lower Decks, to finally telling the story of Captain Pike and even a peek […]

[Retro Review] Let This Be Your Last Battlefield
Often shown in highlight reels and quoted in discussions about Star Trek's more forward thinking messages, Let This Be Your Last Battlefield is at it's simplest, a story of the ridiculousness of segregation. En route to a vital mission of mercy, Kirk and his crew end up in the middle of a political minefield. Interrupted in the mission by a stolen Federation shuttle carrying an injured alien, Lokai from the planet Cheron, they're soon further interrupted by Commissioner Bele, an official representing Cheron who announces Lokai as a political traitor and demanding custody. One asylum request later, Kirk's stuck between the two trying to find the right course of action knowing he has orders to follow beyond the situation. The separation between Belle and Lokai is a simple context. And also a strangely charged one looking at it from a […]

[Treknology] The Holodeck
An immersive experience in itself, the Holodeck is one of the many creature comforts that help bring comfort and entertainment within the life of a starship years from home that not only acts in creating a live action gaming environment, but as a useful tool for educational simulations, experiments and the occasional Hirogen nightmare! The holodeck is a complex device. Essentially a simulated environment generator, the holodeck is usually a vast room that used a combination of forcefields, matter replication and visually manipulative holographic systems to create an immersive environment that one or multiple people can use to not only see and hear, but physically interact with. Able to replicate anything from historical settings to an entirely original landscape, the holodeck ios Knightmare in ultra high resolution without a headset or guide, but a physical interaction with a created world […]

A Fistful of Sisko
In the past few years, Star Trek has made several nods to it's past. But while The NExt Generation and Voyager had their continuations, Deep Space Nine continued to 'black sheep' of the family with it's history and name drops being few and far between. Until Academy when we had an entire episode based around the legend of Starfleet's most complex captains. Starting his show as a widower and single parent, Benjamin Sisko started his time in Star Trek as a reluctant hero turned religious icon who's become a prime figure in Bajoran history, the Federation-Dominion war and much more. If you missed his series, first of.... why?! And also, if you want a quick intro - here's our Sisko top five to see what the fuss is all about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzBkvzPoofQ IN THE PALE MOONLIGHT Season 6, Episode 13 Lets […]

Starfleet Academy to end with with Season 2
Announced first by Variety, it's been announced that Starfleet Academy will end with Season 2. Having just launches in January with the first season finale receiving positive reactions, and it's second season now in post-production following the completion of filming, the announcement comes at an unsurprising time with Paramount undergoing new ownership under Skydance and more business shenanigans with further consolidation in the works with plans to absorb Warner Brothers into the mix. Set in the 32nd century and using Discovery's season 3 'Burn' storyline as a reset point, Starfleet Academy was focused on new original characters who had signed up to be the new stewards of Starfleet's future to rebuild the strength and vision of the Federation. Opening strong, Academy improved throughout it's first season and used it's setting to help strengthen the hopeful vision of the future and […]

Catch Mir If You Can; ‘300th Night’, Starfleet Academy S1E9
As a viewer, it's been just over two months. For the cadets, it's been 300 days. With time jumps between episodes already mentioned, episode nine ends with the conclusion of the first year at the Academy. Celebrations are being had on campus, friendships solidified and fleeting romances are being revisited. But in the grand scale of the universe, the merlu' is about to hit the fan. Writers: Kirsten Beyer & Kenneth Lin Director: Jonathan Frakes Looking back at the context of the first eight episodes, it's been an oddly even season. Which is quite a rarity in the Star Trek Universe. Journeys have been had. Paths have been walked. Lessons have been learned. And even if it's just been eight episodes to us, it's been a year for the cadets and with how far each has come, it doesn't […]

Life, Death and Eternity; ‘The Life Of The Stars’, Starfleet Academy S1E8
It's been a while since the Miyazaki incident. Time has passed but even with a bit of a break through the last episode, no one has really moved on. The students are rejecting therapy to confront their trauma over the event and now, Tarima - the person who saved them by melting peoples brains – is back on campus, now in Starfleet to take her away from the War College path to focus on something a little more chilled out than potentially how to melt peoples brains more efficiently. Writers: Gaia Violo & Jane Maggs Director: Andi Armaganian It's been a while since the Miyazaki incident. My Big Fat Khonian Wedding; ‘Ko’Zeine’, Starfleet Academy S1E7
After the tension and drama on board the Miyazaki, it's time to cool things down with some fun. Or at least try to! Following the incident and trauma from the assignment, it's time for the jolly boys outing. Or spring holidays, whatever you want to call it. All Worlds day is what we're calling it here, even if most of the episode is based in a less strange, more familiar world. Writers: Alex Taub & Eric Anthony Glover Director: Larry Teng To set the stage, and be blunt, shit went down. The Miyakzaki exercise resulted in the death of both an instruction and a student. It's been a month since then and nothings really changed, It's been business as usual. Or as business as usual as it gets from the perspective of a lovestruck twenty-something who's not sure what […]

Furie Road; ‘Come, Lets Away’, Starfleet Academy S1E6
After a personal story for SAM, we finally get some action in Come Lets Away as the cadets from both the Academy and the War College have to work together for a training mission on board a derelict starship. Of course, disaster strikes as there are deadly enemies just waiting for their moment to strike the vulnerable, unseasoned team... Writers: Kenneth Lin & Kiley Rosseter Director: Larry Teng In a huge shift of tone from last weeks joyful exploration of Sam's life and struggles, Academy gets a little darker with this one thanks to the USS Miyazaki giving that old haunted house vibe that carries over well into scifi. The Miyazaki was a failed experiment, a test-bed for an experimental warp drive that would bypass the supply shortages of the Burn, but much like every attempt to replace traditional […]

Wined, Dined and Deep Space Nined; ‘Series Acclimation Mil’, Starfleet Academy S1E5
As a cadet sets out to solve an ancient Starfleet mystery, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and learns the value of forging her own path. Meanwhile, Nahla agrees to help a fellow chancellor with an elaborate alien ritual. Writers: Kirstin Beyer & Tawney Newsome Director: Larry Teng Starting off from the perspective of the academy's resident photonic student SAM giving a presentation on her daily life, all in the style of an early 2000's 'chick flick', you know Lower Decks' alumni Tawney Newsome is all over this script. With overlapping infographics, fourth wall monologues and unrelenting cheer, we get SAM's introduction to herself in more detail. Programmed to be an average 17 year old, she's been sent by her Photonic-based people not just to join the mission of Academy, but to be their Emmisary. Her peoples distrust […]
