Announced first by Variety, it’s been announced that Starfleet Academy will end with Season 2. Having just launches in January with the first season finale receiving positive reactions, and it’s second season now in post-production following the completion of filming, the announcement comes at an unsurprising time with Paramount undergoing new ownership under Skydance and more business shenanigans with further consolidation in the works with plans to absorb Warner Brothers into the mix.

Set in the 32nd century and using Discovery’s season 3 ‘Burn’ storyline as a reset point, Starfleet Academy was focused on new original characters who had signed up to be the new stewards of Starfleet’s future to rebuild the strength and vision of the Federation. Opening strong, Academy improved throughout it’s first season and used it’s setting to help strengthen the hopeful vision of the future and how that inspired the next generation of thrilling heroics. In the announcement, Alex Kurtzman noted that it had been “..my and Noga’s joy and privilege to help carry Gene Roddenberry’s extraordinary vision forward with Starfleet Academy, thanks to the hundreds of hardworking humans who pour every ounce of their talents into the work daily with imagination and reverence. ”
Academy’s cancellation joins the swathe of Star Trek shows that have come to a sudden end in recent years. While Picard was always set to be a three season affair, Discovery’s sudden closure at it’s firth season prompted a two day shoot to tack on an ending for the show, while Nickelodeon-partnered Prodigy was also brought to a close after two seasons despite highly positive reviews. Both Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds, both highly popular shows, were also brought to an end with both hitting a five season limit.
With Strange New Worlds season 4 expected in the Summer, Starfleet Academy looks to close it’s second and final season early 2027 before the former’s condensed fifth season finale. Academy’s cancellation marks the first time in almost ten years that no Star Trek show is under production or pre-production with Secret Hideout – the production home of the franchise – up for contract renewal this year. While the new Paramount leadership have said several times that Star Trek is a priority franchise, we might be going some time without a new Star Trek show on our screens.
