Gaining his first major role only two years after his screen debut, Campbell gained the role of Luke Fuller in the iconic American soap opera Dynasty, acting opposite Jack Coleman a love interest of Steve Carrington until Luke’s death. It was a huge role for Campbell’s early career and, much like Coleman, a launching pad to becoming a workhorse of an actor in TV and film.
Soon after leaving Dynasty, another set of producers had their eyes on Campbell for their own show; a sequel to 60’s space drama Star Trek. Campbell was eyed for the role of the bold first officer, Commander Riker, and the favourite to take the role. Telling StarTrek.com that ‘the best man got the job’ in 2014, and had elsewhere commented that he didn’t feel his final audition went well, but that disappointment didn’t slow him down.
Just a few years later Campbell would star in the cult classic film, The Rocketeer in 1991, Bram Stoikers Dracula in 1992 and build a hugely impressive world of work with highlights including Once And Again from 1999-2002, a role that showcased his steady, understated emotional range; sci fi drama The 4400; as Alan Farragut in the intense thriller Helix; the US Adaption of The Killing and nearly every imaginable role in between.
Within those roles was a return to the Star Trek world when in the shows second season he was brought in as Thadian Okana, an independent cargo hauler who ended up on the Enterprise when a contract went wrong. He’d later revive the role for three episodes of animated series Prodigy.
More recently he can be seen in the latest franchise film I Know What You Did Last Summer alongside Sarah Michelle Gheller.
When not working on film, stage or in a recording studio, Campbell is an avid sailor has tajeb part in multiple long-distance voyages, including the demanding Chicago to Mackinac boat race.
With a career characterized by quiet intensity, grounded performances, and a willingness to explore complex characters, Billy Campbell remains a respected and enduring presence in both American and international entertainment.
