Since the early years of Star Trek, the Prime Directive has been one of the key elements of Starfleet's exploration. Sometimes cited as General Order One, the Prime Directive was implemented as an ethical rule to ensure Starfleet and the Federation stayed neutral in the wider galaxy and ensured non interference in any culture or civilisation.
Infinite diversity in infinite combinations. That's the mantra of Star Trek fans across the world. Yet when it came to alien life the infinite combinations and diversity often came down to face-paint and prosthetics on noticeably normal people. There's little to separate human and Betazoid aside from dark eyes. Vulcans are human looking with pointed ears. Even the reptilian Cardassians have human features buried under rubber and glue.
Wasting no time, the third episode of Discovery's final season fires straight into the core mission with Burnham and her crew following the next clue to finding the Progenitors hidden secrets, and that clue takes them to a familiar planet; the Trill home world. There Culber becomes host to a long departed Trill who's consciousness is transferred to him to lead Burnham to the next part of the puzzle... As Discovery races on, and the mission brings closure to Adira's dwindling relationship, Saru faces his own romantic challenges with T'Rina planning to announce their engagement.
Launching as a two part story, Discovery's final season looks to be reinventing itself for the last time by dropping all the background drama for a more uplifting mission this time round. Where last season felt like things were settling down – perhaps a little too quickly – with the Species 10C story bringing together the fractured factions of the Federation past and present, the story veered more into the style of classic slow-burn sci fi.
Since it's launch as Star Trek's new flagship show in 2017, Star Trek Discovery has made an effort to reinvent itself year by year to tell new stories with new styles and themes. Each season being it's own new mission, the crew began as distrustful strangers under the command of a cold tactician to living in the far future trying to restore the Federation into the utopia of it's prime.
Over the past few years through Comms, we've looked back at past iterations of Star Trek with rose coloured glasses and a bit of humour. This time round, we're reaching back only seven years for the 'youngest' retro review to date. Since it's debut in 2017, Discovery has launched a whole new world of Star Trek from animated comedies, to sombre reunions with past heroes. Ait all began with Discovery. This year the flagship show of the modern era comes to a close as Michael Burnham leads her crew through a treasure hunt that began centuries before her time. With the end in sight for Discovery as a series, we're looking right back to the beginning. The episode that, not only kicked off the show, but of the modern Star Trek era.
