Joining SFC can be a bit of a whirlwind. With decades of history and developing our own structure and community, it can seem a little overwhelming knowing who’s who and where to begin. Everyone starts their time in SFC their own way. Some just dive right in. Some like to know more about us and some prefer a more immersive over casual approach. No matter how you want to make your membership, the Academy will guide you through those first steps…
When people think of Academy, they think of it as a testing ground filled with exams, questions and a sort of proving ground to flex your Trek knowledge. Traditionally, thats exactly what Academy was. For a long time members would join, go through Academy and get their first rank reward and assignment once they’d finished the course.
A few years ago Academy was changed dramatically. There was no requirement to take part. Technically there weren’t any test to take part in within the ‘core’ course. We moved from a test of fandom into an introduction of who SFC were; our structure, purpose and contacts. The role of Commandant became somewhat honorary as, even after retaining old Academy tests just for members who did prefer testing their trivia knowledge, the interest in that fell to 2% of incoming members.
Recognising social shifts as well as a knowledge based entry system as barrier for new fans to the franchise, Academy moved from a testing ground to something more relaxed. While we do still offer those tests as an optional extra under the umbrella of the Advanced Class, the core of the Academy’s purpose is a welcome guide to SFCQ2, how we work, what we stand for.
The primary offerings within Academy’s current system is as follows;
- Orientation: A quick and simple step by step guide to your new membership and next steps in the process. The Orientation Guide will delve further in to the Cadet and Recruitment, what to expect and how to access the officers hub. At any time you can reach out to the Academy Commandant for help, advice or support in getting to know the ins and outs of the fleet.
- Core Operations: Designed as an introduction to Quadrant 2, the Core Operations course is a quick guide to our membership guidelines and values, a breakdown of our structure and ‘field studies’ introducing you to our units and local groups. Core covers basic Q2 members information, an introduction to our organisation and fleet contacts, our social media channels and unit operations.
- Advance Class: ….and of course, while Academy as it stands will always be refreshed as an orientation to Q2 Membership, the “Advanced Class” will continue to exist as an optional series of open book tests and exams marked by Academy staff for those who like either immersion or just testing their Trek knowledge!
In addition to the above, we have room for more with Specialist Studies designed to offer more optional additions, while Officer Progression and the Command Training Program are a range of seasonal and varied courses for Q2 members hosted and announced as contained events.
Whether you’re new to the fleet, or just need a refresher, the Academy is always available, always optional and always there to offer support for your Starfleet journey.
Enlist in Starfleet
For access to our Members Hub, Academy and a whole host of wonderful crewmates across the UK, France and Japan, you can find out how to join SFCQ2 and enlist today! And as we don’t believe fandom comes at a cost, membership and all membership benefits are completely free.

[Departmental] Introducing General Board
The General Board is a relatively new concept and the next evolution of Fleet Support. Mirroring the Captains Table, the General Board is constructed to help overall fleet operations and to contribute more voices and ideas to the clubs operation. Based very loosely on the political 'two house' structure, and named after the real-world General Board within the US Navy in the first half of the 20th century, the starting point was to appoint two sets of voices within the fleet. The Captains represent their unit and their members need within that unit, each representing an area or group that makes up the whole. To contrast and add to the Captains Table, Fleet Support – and now the expanded General Board – allows to give both opinions of fleet leadership and fleet membership equal standing and ensure we hear a […]

[Q2&A] Membership Handbook: Revised & Updated for 2026
With over fifty years (and counting) of history, joining SFC can sometimes be a whirlwind and while we're always focused on a more casual experience, tit can sometimes be overwhelming knowing where to start. While we offer our Academy as an induction tour of Quadrant 2's organisation and structure, and are always open to expanding more information in the Fleet Database, our Officers Pack gives you a one stop resource to highlight our core policies, membership information and more; The Membership Handbook/ Membership within Q2 is fairly laid back. [Q2&A] Career Track
SFC has always structured it's internal reward and recognition system on the command structure of Starfleet on screen. Newbies are cadets. When they become full members, they become Ensigns. And those eager to take on a leadership role can rank up to Commander or Captain. Even the board of directors are mirrored within the theme as Commodores and Admirals! It's always been the way, but the path of an officer isn't for everyone... Despite the original idea of all star ship personnel being highly trained astronauts, therefore nullifying the need for enlisted crew, the enlisted ranks have existed in some form since the original series. More defined in the film era, particularly under the revision of style and structure in The Wrath of Khan, they have been slightly more prominent since. Most notable of the enlisted members of Starfleet was […]
