While SFC’s rank system is one of the most obvious form of rewards within Quadrant 2, with members informally given the rank and title for each grade, rank is just one level of recognition within the fleet for out Captains and Fleet Support to highlight a members contributions.

A more common form of recognition are our Commendations and Citations. Having taken various forms over the years, our commendations are the more open of all with four categories – Service, Departmental, Leadership or Special Commendations.

Commendations and Special Commendations are the most common and popular ways to reward or thank a member for their time and dedication. Awards can either be submitted as a fleet-wide recognition, through proposal via your CO or Fleet Admin, however units may offer their own unit-focused awards and commendations concurrent with Q2.

Alongside Commendations our Citation Medal’s are the highest achievement a member can be presented with and remain a rare commodity. Over the years SFC has had many medals presented to members with varying reason and history. From 2402 (2025) onwards a slight refresh offers new medals and honours for members that align with real world awards as well as those seen within Starfleet on screen.

The 2402 medal set breaks itself down into six separate levels of award. Each of the medals are ‘fleet wide’ awards issued and authorised by the Admiralty Board. While each has differing criteria for award and how to be nominated for the honours list, there’s no limit to how many times a member can be nominated or how many times they can receive the award.

While we can’t offer physical medals (for now), each award comes with it’s own digital certificate for your records to be stored or printed at the awarded members leisure. Print copies may also be requested or issued direct from the board or unit command team. It’s all personal preference how you prefer to keep stock of your recognition achievements within Q2 but all options are available!

Initially based (loosely) around the Medal of Honor seen in Star Trek Discovery’s first season, each medal comes with it’s own unique colour scheme and ribbon to delineate between each one with ease. A ‘Ribbon’ system is also in place with a triangular companion to represent the medal on uniform which is, again, based very loosely on the updated idealised medals worn in Discovery’s first season.

In addition you might also see a higher frequency of award come through with the introduction of Event and Attainment certificates including our Away Team and Alert certificates all to help highlight the stellar efforts of our members across the fleet!

[Treknology] Beam Me Up!

Step into the transporter and with the touch of a few buttons and sliders you're whisked away to an alien landscape ready to explore. As synonymous to the Star Trek lore as phasers and tricorders, the transporter is one of the most vital tools within Starfleet, letting officers and crew travel instantaneously between environments without the need for time consuming shuttle trips or finding a starship-sized parking space to land in. Developed as a narrative tool, the transporter lets the story move along swiftly without breaks in the action and in a budget friendly manner. All you need to film is someone stepping into the large chamber, paste over some special effects, then pick up in another filming location. Aside from the creative benefits, it also showed the enhanced technological nature of the 23rd century. How it works is fairly […]

That Guy From That Thing: Harris Yulin

Among the many acclaimed guest appearances from all corners of the Star Trek Universe, there are only a small few who gave as deep a performance as Harris Yulin in his sole appearance in the franchise. Taking the spotlight as Aamin Marritza in Deep Space Nine's first season episode Duet, a Cardassian civilian who arrives at Deep Space Nine and raises a massive red flag for Kira when she learns he has a condition that links him to a brutal mining camp that many Bajorans suffered through during the occupation. Yulin is an actor who you may not recognise by name, but you always recognise. Having made his name in the New York theatre scene in the 60's, he quickly established himself as a serious dramatic talent with an incredible command of language, subtly and presence before he'd ever step […]

Who is The Borg Queen?

Since their first appearance in 1989, the Borg had been an oddly mysterious and chilling antagonist for the Federation. Following their first encounter with the Enterprise-D, an inevitable event accelerated by Q meddling to challenge Picard, the Borg would swiftly make their mark with the first of many attacks on Earth, forcing Starfleet to adapt and change to the new and unexpected threat. A cold, faceless enemy, the Borg are cybernetic beings acting as one collective mind. Spreading through the galaxy trying to find perfection, they absorb anything of value they see into their collective, spreading like a virus and wiping out individuality to become a drone serving their eternal mission. In trying to assimilate the Federation into their collective, the hive created a new leader in Locutus, a human given a unique voice to speak for the Borg and […]

[Inside Trek] Behind the Viewscreen: Robert H Justman

It takes an army to bring a TV show to life, especially one creating it's own world to explore in and more often than not the people behind the scenes are often unsung heroes despite being key to the creation of an iconic a legacy as Star Trek. Robert Justman was one of the many responsible to shaping the Star Trek Universe, particularly in it's early days, and was one of the most influential producers in helping form the original series. Staring his career in technical and production roles, Justman learned the ropes in the 1950's as television in the US would go from a rare luxury to a household staple throughout the decade. Building his skills and reputation as assistant director and production manager on a variety of styles, Justman gained a reputation for being highly unorganised and keeping […]

[Q2&A] Orientation: The Officers Hub

In the past ten years we've tried to make a conscious effort to make things easier for members to manage and consult the admin side of Q2. Before the days of the internet, any guides, documents or forms were issued by request and a little harder to come by but now things tend to be found within our online membership portal that's constantly changing and growing based on feedback from across the fleet. Now we try to make things as easy add adaptable as possible, utilising our online home for as many member needs as we can with our key resource online being our Officers Hub. In it's current form the Officers Hub is a catch all place for fleet updates and membership administration, allowing you to make changes, updates or get information about Q2 and it's processes without having […]

[Q2&A] Celebrating Ten Years of the USS Churchill

Commissioned in February 2016 to oversee operations in Southern England and Wales, the USS Churchil is one of two online-centric units created by merging several localised units into one larger region. Throughout 2015-16, SFC was experiencing some fatigue and, to cut it short, needed a bit of a reboot. While there was activity and things were ticking along, the fleet as a whole was in a bit of a rough patch. After a huge fleet wide consultation, we went full Voyager and hit the reset button. Keeping Sovereign active as the 'catch all' unit with a heavy base in the North of England and Ireland, there was enough spark in the South to keep things alive with a new combined 'super-unit', a second online base from which to grow. Using the Sovereign as a template, the USS Churchill was created […]

[Q2&A] Positively Positive.

Last week Starfleet Academy debuted and something odd happened. If you're a regular to any Trek news or discussion site, you noticed a spike. Even our usually sleepy Facebook profile went from a handful of likes to over 2,000, am good chunk of which got deleted. It wasn't a normal spike, certainly not normal for a debut show, not normal to be everywhere and – to be frank – not normal in terms of comments. It was a mix of disturbing and sad. Disturbing for the high amount of bigoted and sexist memes and commentary that seemed to mock murdered US citizens. For a subculture of fandom that grew up praising – to the point of gloating – that Star Trek was about intellectualism and inclusion, it certainly showed that as a fandom, and a united international culture, we've taken more […]

Q2&A Fleet Ops: Fleet Quartermaster

Managing supplies for the fleet, the Quartermaster's role at it's most basic is to manage supplies and goods for the fleet and offer exclusive items for members who are keen or interested in collecting unique items or displaying their part in our community. One of the core parts of Q2 means you can shape your membership however you want. When it comes to grabbing unique fleet items, it's not for everyone to have their cupboards filled with clutter or old patches or cards. Whereas a fair few members over the years stil have their original membership documents from decades ago. When there was a fee for membership, cost of supply was covered (well, barely!) whereas now membership is free, any goodies are opt-in and in terms of fleet-wide items, tend to be gauged and pre-ordered ahead of time. For the […]
