Proving yourself at Starfleet Academy always seemed to come down to competitive rivalry. Whether it was Sisko failing to win over Solok, Finnegan’s constant pranks on Kirk, or Georgiou drinking everyone under the table, even the most professional stand up Captains have spent their youth in a knife fight with a Nausican. Vitrus Reflux get it all out the way as cadets Lythe and Raymi get locked into a battle of the ego’s while the War College next door pops up to assert their dominance!
Writers: Alex Taub & Kiley Rossetter
Director: Doug Aarniokoski
As the more militaristic war college use their current standing as the primary source of Starfleet for the past hundred-plys years to prove the revival of the Academy is a failed experiment, tensions begin to bubble over through mixed physical training leading to conflicts, a war of words and an eventual prank war. But while the Academy is determined to prove their worth and outshine the war college, they struggle to put their own differences aside to become a team…
One of the downsides of Academy is that, while there’s a lot on offer, the genre stereotypes are in full force which is a bit of a hump to get over and makes things a little too predictable in places. In a sense it was a good thing that they got this cliché, the rival school prank war, out the way and use it to give some more insight to the characters while laying the ground work for their eventual cohesion as a team to be reckoned with.
Pulling some focus away from Caleb for the third instalment, the episode revolves around Raymi’s selfish need to be the best. Again, a lot of cliché as it all comes down to overbearing parents who only give him attention when he’s the super-genius, making him automatically try to beat Genesis at everything. It’s not an original plot, and it was all cliché filled, but it was nice to get some insight to the character aside from being stock antagonist while at the same time having him learn his first ‘lesson’ by stepping aside and accepting that Genesis was the better choice for team captain.
Of course it was all wrapped up with him snapping and biting off more than he could chew with the War College, challenging them to what amounts to tactical laser tag. Which wasn’t the brightest idea going up against soldiers, and of course all goes wrong until Genesis takes over and out-smarts them, rather than try to win a fight. Though the trainers for the game, Reno and Thok, kind of stole the scenes with their deadpan comedy working oddly well together, and Reno getting to be the one to delivery clever advice while Ake just gets bored and annoyed with everything and everyone – or so it seemed until Caleb clicked on that she was secretly dropping hints on how to win the war…
While it was mainly focused on Genesis becoming the team captain, and Raymi learning to eat humble pie and become part of the group, there was some follow up with Caleb and Tamira’s young romance. Which was fairly straight forward; she’s a bit of an overactive Betazoid and feelings are bad. Very bad. It was nice to get the clarity of why she chose the war college over the academy, but I’m more curious on where they’re taking her through the season.
Overall the episode felt a little disjointed as there was too much thrown in to make it all click nicely. The Calica training, then the impromptu game, and finally the final prank was all presented in a way that might have cut down the episode time, but didn’t really let anything flow very well. And that last prank – while very fitting to use science and regulation to outplay the War College – felt a bit underwhelming.
That said, the theme of the episode worked fairly well, despite the cliche’s, with Raymi taking a big character step, while the others took their own small steps of becoming a team. Especially Caleb who was rightfully called out by Tamira’s intrusively Betazoid bluntness. The stars of the show though were the faculty who just get to have fun in the background. Mainly by showing off Ake’s playful boredom, showing that her own on site nemesis Kelrec is also a bit weird and seeing Reno and Thok not really enjoy life as sports coaches.
It wasn’t as good as it could be, and the dialogue still feels a little off in general, but for a show thats all about discovering the values of Starfleet, thematically it worked and was nice to see them showcase the openness and honesty that will help to build their team over the season.
EPISODE DISCUSSION & SPOILERS
Highlights
- Kragg trying to be the peaceful healer is a nice contrast to Worf and his panic at being called to fight is oddly endearing considering he's likely strong enough to murder everyone.
- It was nice to see Reno's casual words of wisdom at work in an academic setting and show why she was brought over from Discovery
- Having worked briefly with tactical laser tag, I laughed a little at the memory of similar attempts not to say 'laser tag'
All Connected...
Giving a touch more information on Tamira’s condition this week leaned in to the already established Betazoid spectrum. While Lwaxanna Troi had refined telepathic skill, TNG’s Tin Man introduced Tam Elbrun, a Betazoid who’s abilities were active since birth instead of maturing through puberty. Voyager also introduced the other end of the spectrum, Lon Suder, a man who couldn’t even read his own emotion let alone others. Though thankfully it looks like Tamira’s closer to Elbrun’s oversensitive abilities rather than Suders’ more murdery lifestyle…

Sixty Year Mission…
It's been a really weird year already for the world of Star Trek fans. We started 2026 with a new venture into a strange new future with Starfleet Academy. Then just as the show had won people over, we found out it's the latest in a long list of recent productions to get a cancellation order, is a bit of a weird way to start the 60th anniversary of a legendary franchise. The past few years we've kind of spoiled. Growing up it was exciting to have Deep Space Nine run alongside the Next Generation. In modern times we had multiple shows going at once with Discovery's launch spawning a new world of story telling from revisiting Picard in his post-Starfleet years, to animated comedy with Lower Decks, to finally telling the story of Captain Pike and even a peek […]

[Retro Review] Let This Be Your Last Battlefield
Often shown in highlight reels and quoted in discussions about Star Trek's more forward thinking messages, Let This Be Your Last Battlefield is at it's simplest, a story of the ridiculousness of segregation. En route to a vital mission of mercy, Kirk and his crew end up in the middle of a political minefield. Interrupted in the mission by a stolen Federation shuttle carrying an injured alien, Lokai from the planet Cheron, they're soon further interrupted by Commissioner Bele, an official representing Cheron who announces Lokai as a political traitor and demanding custody. One asylum request later, Kirk's stuck between the two trying to find the right course of action knowing he has orders to follow beyond the situation. The separation between Belle and Lokai is a simple context. And also a strangely charged one looking at it from a […]

[Treknology] The Holodeck
An immersive experience in itself, the Holodeck is one of the many creature comforts that help bring comfort and entertainment within the life of a starship years from home that not only acts in creating a live action gaming environment, but as a useful tool for educational simulations, experiments and the occasional Hirogen nightmare! The holodeck is a complex device. Essentially a simulated environment generator, the holodeck is usually a vast room that used a combination of forcefields, matter replication and visually manipulative holographic systems to create an immersive environment that one or multiple people can use to not only see and hear, but physically interact with. Able to replicate anything from historical settings to an entirely original landscape, the holodeck ios Knightmare in ultra high resolution without a headset or guide, but a physical interaction with a created world […]

A Fistful of Sisko
In the past few years, Star Trek has made several nods to it's past. But while The NExt Generation and Voyager had their continuations, Deep Space Nine continued to 'black sheep' of the family with it's history and name drops being few and far between. Until Academy when we had an entire episode based around the legend of Starfleet's most complex captains. Starting his show as a widower and single parent, Benjamin Sisko started his time in Star Trek as a reluctant hero turned religious icon who's become a prime figure in Bajoran history, the Federation-Dominion war and much more. If you missed his series, first of.... why?! And also, if you want a quick intro - here's our Sisko top five to see what the fuss is all about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzBkvzPoofQ IN THE PALE MOONLIGHT Season 6, Episode 13 Lets […]

Starfleet Academy to end with with Season 2
Announced first by Variety, it's been announced that Starfleet Academy will end with Season 2. Having just launches in January with the first season finale receiving positive reactions, and it's second season now in post-production following the completion of filming, the announcement comes at an unsurprising time with Paramount undergoing new ownership under Skydance and more business shenanigans with further consolidation in the works with plans to absorb Warner Brothers into the mix. Set in the 32nd century and using Discovery's season 3 'Burn' storyline as a reset point, Starfleet Academy was focused on new original characters who had signed up to be the new stewards of Starfleet's future to rebuild the strength and vision of the Federation. Opening strong, Academy improved throughout it's first season and used it's setting to help strengthen the hopeful vision of the future and […]

Catch Mir If You Can; ‘300th Night’, Starfleet Academy S1E9
As a viewer, it's been just over two months. For the cadets, it's been 300 days. With time jumps between episodes already mentioned, episode nine ends with the conclusion of the first year at the Academy. Celebrations are being had on campus, friendships solidified and fleeting romances are being revisited. But in the grand scale of the universe, the merlu' is about to hit the fan. Writers: Kirsten Beyer & Kenneth Lin Director: Jonathan Frakes Looking back at the context of the first eight episodes, it's been an oddly even season. Which is quite a rarity in the Star Trek Universe. Journeys have been had. Paths have been walked. Lessons have been learned. And even if it's just been eight episodes to us, it's been a year for the cadets and with how far each has come, it doesn't […]

Life, Death and Eternity; ‘The Life Of The Stars’, Starfleet Academy S1E8
It's been a while since the Miyazaki incident. Time has passed but even with a bit of a break through the last episode, no one has really moved on. The students are rejecting therapy to confront their trauma over the event and now, Tarima - the person who saved them by melting peoples brains – is back on campus, now in Starfleet to take her away from the War College path to focus on something a little more chilled out than potentially how to melt peoples brains more efficiently. My Big Fat Khonian Wedding; ‘Ko’Zeine’, Starfleet Academy S1E7
After the tension and drama on board the Miyazaki, it's time to cool things down with some fun. Or at least try to! Following the incident and trauma from the assignment, it's time for the jolly boys outing. Or spring holidays, whatever you want to call it. All Worlds day is what we're calling it here, even if most of the episode is based in a less strange, more familiar world. Writers: Alex Taub & Eric Anthony Glover Director: Larry Teng To set the stage, and be blunt, shit went down. The Miyakzaki exercise resulted in the death of both an instruction and a student. It's been a month since then and nothings really changed, It's been business as usual. Or as business as usual as it gets from the perspective of a lovestruck twenty-something who's not sure what […]

Furie Road; ‘Come, Lets Away’, Starfleet Academy S1E6
After a personal story for SAM, we finally get some action in Come Lets Away as the cadets from both the Academy and the War College have to work together for a training mission on board a derelict starship. Of course, disaster strikes as there are deadly enemies just waiting for their moment to strike the vulnerable, unseasoned team... Writers: Kenneth Lin & Kiley Rosseter Director: Larry Teng In a huge shift of tone from last weeks joyful exploration of Sam's life and struggles, Academy gets a little darker with this one thanks to the USS Miyazaki giving that old haunted house vibe that carries over well into scifi. The Miyazaki was a failed experiment, a test-bed for an experimental warp drive that would bypass the supply shortages of the Burn, but much like every attempt to replace traditional […]

Wined, Dined and Deep Space Nined; ‘Series Acclimation Mil’, Starfleet Academy S1E5
As a cadet sets out to solve an ancient Starfleet mystery, she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and learns the value of forging her own path. Meanwhile, Nahla agrees to help a fellow chancellor with an elaborate alien ritual. Writers: Kirstin Beyer & Tawney Newsome Director: Larry Teng Starting off from the perspective of the academy's resident photonic student SAM giving a presentation on her daily life, all in the style of an early 2000's 'chick flick', you know Lower Decks' alumni Tawney Newsome is all over this script. With overlapping infographics, fourth wall monologues and unrelenting cheer, we get SAM's introduction to herself in more detail. Programmed to be an average 17 year old, she's been sent by her Photonic-based people not just to join the mission of Academy, but to be their Emmisary. Her peoples distrust […]
