As Academy reopens it’s doors, we’ve been introduced to a whole new cast of cadets ready to take on the responsibility of being Starfleets next generation of explorers. But among the new faces are familiar ones sharing their knowledge and experience with one of their new tutors making the jump from Discovery. If you jumped straight into Academy though, you may be wondering just who is temporal mechanics class lead, and occasional sports coach, Jet Reno…?
Making her first appearance in Discovery’s second season opener ‘Brother’, Commander Jett Reno is a Starfleet engineer renowned for her razor-sharp intellect, unflappable calm under pressure, and famously dry wit. A veteran of numerous high-risk assignments, Reno has built a reputation as one of Starfleet’s most resourceful and unconventional problem-solvers.
Before Discovery, Reno began her career as a starship engineer, specializing in propulsion systems, power distribution, and emergency repairs under extreme conditions. Over the years, she survived multiple catastrophic incidents that honed both her technical mastery and her blunt, no-nonsense approach to leadership. One such incident led to her chance assignment on Discovery.
During the Klingon-Federation war in the mid 23rd century, Reno was assigned to the USS Hiawatha when it was attacked, becoming the only survivor during the ships crash landing. Surviving alone for ten months, adapting ship systems and building her own ‘kid’ drones along the way, she was eventually rescued by an away team led by Captain Pike.
Near death experiences, along with a rather ambiguous career prior to Starfleet where she’d hinted at less than straight forward (or legal) jobs from bar work to working with antique smugglers, contributed to her relaxed approach to her work, as well as to the command chain; a quality that found her butting heads with specialist scientist Paul Stamets on board Discovery who’s lab in engineering would often be graced with her presence. In contrast to Stamets’ being more of a perfectionist, Reno fixes things by any means necessary, usually improvising a patch job in a crisis./
Brought to life by comedian Tig Notaro, Reno’s time on Discovery was best remembered for her deadpan humour and casual approach to, well, everything. Confident in her work, she’d happily become part of the engineering crew fixing up the ship whether it was ripped apart in combat or if a replicator wasn’t behaving itself.
Though beneath her sarcasm was a loyal crew mate who would put aside the jokes to offer some wisdom and advice to her peers and, despite a shady past, was a principled officer who believes in Starfleet’s core ideals. A valued part of her crew, she was a perfect example of how idealism and work ethic isn’t the only strength needed to survive in Starfleet, it’s bringing the crew together to face any scenario.
Set and travel rules in place during, and following, the COVID pandemic limited Notaro’s time on the show in later seasons but while the crew split up at the end of season 2, Reno was one of the officers who stood with her new found crew to leave everything behind and travel into the far future to take what would later evolve into Zora far from the reach of rogue AI Control.
In the years after Discovery’s mission to find the ‘Progenitors’, Reno would leave Discovery behind and find a place at the revived Starfleet Academy, using her time travel experience as part of a class about temporal mechanics and using her unique knowledge of Starfleet’s earlier years to inspire new generations of officers.

Time has certainly flown by as Strange New Worlds penultimate season is just days away. Things have been a little guarded since the show was announced to be ending with a shortened 5th season, but it gave the production plenty of warning to wrap things up and bring an end to the original Captain and his crew!
