Since their first appearance in 1989, the Borg had been an oddly mysterious and chilling antagonist for the Federation. Following their first encounter with the Enterprise-D, an inevitable event accelerated by Q meddling to challenge Picard, the Borg would swiftly make their mark with the first of many attacks on Earth, forcing Starfleet to adapt and change to the new and unexpected threat.
A cold, faceless enemy, the Borg are cybernetic beings acting as one collective mind. Spreading through the galaxy trying to find perfection, they absorb anything of value they see into their collective, spreading like a virus and wiping out individuality to become a drone serving their eternal mission.
In trying to assimilate the Federation into their collective, the hive created a new leader in Locutus, a human given a unique voice to speak for the Borg and oversee the assimilation of Earth. That human, Jean Luc Picard, had their assimilation reversed but in doing so he buried the memory of what lay at the centre of the Borg’s hive mind; The Queen.
Directing and instructing the hive as they spread throughout the galaxy, the queen is both a physical manifestation of the collective and the sole entity in control of the hive mind. Where the concept of the Borg had always been an image of technology gone wrong as well as a loss of freedom to conform to the one mind, the Queen’s introduction added a new level showing that behind the drones was a real person as their strategic core who, unlike their drones, their own mind.
In Star Trek First Contact, a sequel to Picards assimilation in Best of Both Worlds, the Borg Queen led a mission back in time to assimilate Earth before the Federation was even an idea. Leading her drones to take over the Enterprise-E piece by piece, the Queen was revealed as the heart of the collective, resurfacing Picard’s repressed memories of her during his short time under her control as Locutus. Filled with ego and logic, the Queen attempted to slowly break down Data’s complex design to bring him into their collective as her equal, a superior replacement for Locutus.
Despite her somewhat horrific death, having her organic side burned off and her mechanical remains dismantled, the Queen’s consciousness survived in anew host for decades to come. Retreating bacvk to the Borg’s core territory in the Delta Quadrant, the Queen would find an enemy in Captain Janeway as part of Seven of Nine’s exploration in being re-integrated into humanity after spending a lifetime as a drone. Following another devastating defeat thanks to Voyager’s crew, the Queen would regroup with what little remained of the Borg, letting her emotion take over in the form of rage and furious vengeance.
Slowly building a new way to defeat Starfleet and the Federation, the Queen manipulated Starfleet thanks to new allies who’d help spread a new form of assimilation through a more organic transition, leading to the revelation that she again aimed to find a new Locutus by utilising Jack Crusher’s inherited Borg traits from his father, Jean Luc Picard.
A somewhat fascinating addition to the Borg lore, the Queen is a paradox in herself, clinging on to her unique persona while building a vast army of drones who lose their individuality to serve her need for perfection. Having a single mind behind the goal not only gave a new twist to the Borg whilst giving a singular enemy to defeat, but expanded the idea of the collective and how it operates as a unique entity within the Star Trek universe.
Originating as a more sensual villain using the allure of her power to try and bring Data into her world, the Queen’s mask of strength would drop in Voyager as she became somewhat of a bitter rival of Captain Janeway who’d ultimately outsmart the collective and destroy it’s core transwarp hub. Decades the Queen would pull all her resources into one supersized Borg Cube, using the bodies of dead drones to power her in her final plan to try and defeat humanity.
Over the years the Queen was brought to ife by various actors. Originating the role, Alice Krige would make her first appearance in First Contact but return for the Voyager finale and as the voice of the Queen. Susanna Thomson would bring a more tactically minded Queen throughout most of Voyager and Picard’s second season would introduce Annie Wersching for Picards second season with her unfortunate passing resulting in Krige returning for the voice role while Jayne Seymour took the physical role of the Queen.
Each portrayal of the Queen showed a different side of her, from the all powerful manipulator, to the ruthless tactician we saw in Voyager and ultimately a defeated and bitter Queen finding a new level of perfection in a cunning yet desperate ploy. We even meet an alternate universe Queen who, as well as highlighting that her consciousness transcends dimensions, could never let her capture by the Confederation lead to her being seen as weak.
No matter which version we get, the Borg Queen remains a powerful symbol who challenges the boundaries between human and machine, individuality and unity, and represents a dark reflection of humanity’s ambition. The Borg Queen continues to remind audiences that perfection, especially one achieved through control, comes at an unthinkable cost.

Developed as a narrative tool, the transporter lets the story move along swiftly without breaks in the action and in a budget friendly manner. All you need to film is someone stepping into the large chamber, paste over some special effects, then pick up in another filming location. Aside from the creative benefits, it also showed the enhanced technological nature of the 23rd century. How it works is fairly […]
