Joining SFC can sometimes be a whirlwind as you’ll be processed by our Administration, passed oer to Academy, introduced to your CO and meet other members through Europa or other means. Sometimes it can be tricky getting to grips with who’s who within Q2. As part of our Q2&A Updates, we’ve decided it’s time to Meet The Fleet! And to start, we figured we’d start with the first name you’ll see after joining our collective!
James Tyler Marczynka
Director of Fleet Administration, SFCHQ
- Service ID: SC-221005-DAR
- Current Rank: Admiral
- Enlisted: 68675.39 (October 2014)
After you apply to Q2, the first name you’ll see in your inbox is our current fleet Admin. Having been invited to join the Admiralty Board in 2015, With a background in project management, entertainment and promotion, James began working in Communications designing and distributing regulars Comms updates in downloadable magazine format, eventually double hatting to cover Admin before fully swapping positions in late 2022.
Outwith Q2, James moved from entertainment into a more tech-focused field and spends his spare time tinkering with costume making, prop building and spending far to much time on reddit!
What brought you SFC?
I’d lightly been involved in a couple of fan clubs and writing groups, but that fell away and I focused purely on work. After a while, all my friends circles revolved around work so I googled for something more fun and found Q2.
What do you do within Q2?
Administrative tasks and oversight, though that varies to be honest. Admin covers membership services primarily, so I’m usually the first person people see when they come aboard. But I’ve been focusing a lot on fleet structure, logical expansion and overall presentation for the past year or two as part of general board duties.
Have there been any memorable ‘career highlights’?
I’ve been really proud of being close to Tesla as it formed and grew, the work we did in Comms before I had to step aside…. but it’s all about the people for me. There’s a lot of people who I’ve met and now consider good friends, thats had the biggest highlight.
Do you have any goals ahead of you in Q2?
My ultimate goal was to Harry Kim it and just stay as an Ensign for the entire membership period. That didn’t quite work out the way I wanted it to…
How about your down time?
I don’t get much, but I distract myself with Star Trek Online regularly, which has been quite fun since taking my fleet to the -STO- community in game. I also dabble in writing and design to amuse myself, mainly with sarcasm laced reviews here in Q2.
What are you watching/reading right now?
Just finished Foundation Season 3. Currently watching Only Murders in the Building, Peackemaker and Invasion. Reading… I started Persepolis Rising, but put it aside to focus on some research I’m working on.
What Trek is your Trek and why?
Deep Space Nine. The format worked better for me and I liked the idea of watching the characters and relationships grow in a more homely way in contrast to mostly keeping the status quo while flying between weekly adventures.
If you had to serve with any ship and Captain, who would you pick?
I’d go with Chakotay and the Protostar. It’s a nifty little ship and a relatively relaxed captain with a quiet morality that would work well for me.
If you got to write your own show in the Star Trek Universe, what would it be about?
I’d like another starbase show. Maybe a colony. I liked the Quantum Leap sequel where they had Ben’s mission mixed with the stories at base and I think a nice drama focusing on political movements, kind of like Homeland in Space, would work in that sort of format.
You can read through James’ regular On Screen Retro Reviews here at Q2, check out one of his pet projects in his Admirals Blog or search for -STO- The Borg Brigade in Star Trek Online to join in a fleet alert ahead of his incoming Cross The Streams updates for Q2.

Q2&A Fleet Ops: Fleet Quartermaster
Managing supplies for the fleet, the Quartermaster's role at it's most basic is to manage supplies and goods for the fleet and offer exclusive items for members who are keen or interested in collecting unique items or displaying their part in our community. One of the core parts of Q2 means you can shape your membership however you want. When it comes to grabbing unique fleet items, it's not for everyone to have their cupboards filled with clutter or old patches or cards. Whereas a fair few members over the years stil have their original membership documents from decades ago. When there was a fee for membership, cost of supply was covered (well, barely!) whereas now membership is free, any goodies are opt-in and in terms of fleet-wide items, tend to be gauged and pre-ordered ahead of time. For the […]

[Q2&A] Fleet Development.
Every Star Trek fans dreams of being the captain of their own Starship and within Q2's network, everyone within the fleet has their chance. Sure, we can't give you a real starship, and you likely won't have to deal with long haul trips to the Hromi Cluster to pick up a gas sample, or deal with random attacks from the Tzenkethi. You don't even get a real chair. But you can be part of the leadership within the club and join the many who have helped shape our direction. Unit's are, and always will be, the core of SFC. It is within them that members can indulge in their shared interests for Star Trek and science fiction while enjoying the company of fellow fans and like minded people. At their best, units are a unique and welcoming social group that […]

[Q2&A] Talking Ship.
Since the dawn of time, well, around 1974, SFC's overall presentation as a fleet has been fairly simple and straight forward. The Fleet is the overall structure, the Administration are the Admirals and the heart of it all – our individual groups and regions – are the Starships, each with their own Captain, command crew and optional know it all teenage genius. All units within Q2 base themselves on the ships of the line we've seen over the decades on TV, from the original Enterprise right through to, well, the new original Enterprise. Partly down to the logic that every group needs someone in charge (the Captain), and partly because, well, star ships are cool. Even God wanted one for himself. And with so much variety, especially now with decades of design input, all new and prospective CO's have a […]

Fleet Focus: Location, Location, Location…
Starfleet on screen has always been focused on the visual of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge with locations on each end being used. While various buildings have been added tot he mix including the Tillman Water Reclimnation Centre for it's sci fi appearance, or th eGetty Centre for a more traditional aesthetic, the bridge has always made for a great and recognisable visual for the franchise. There's other reasons, aside from the image, of course. San Fransisco was chosen as thats where the UN Charter was signed, which created a nice link to a unified fleet in the future. The main location for Starfleet Headquarters, which was very nicely refined for Star Trek Picard, is Horsehoe Bay, home of Fort Baker which had been a key port for the United Stated Navy since the early 20th century and now hosts […]

[Q2&A] Career Track
SFC has always structured it's internal reward and recognition system on the command structure of Starfleet on screen. Newbies are cadets. When they become full members, they become Ensigns. And those eager to take on a leadership role can rank up to Commander or Captain. Even the board of directors are mirrored within the theme as Commodores and Admirals! It's always been the way, but the path of an officer isn't for everyone... Despite the original idea of all star ship personnel being highly trained astronauts, therefore nullifying the need for enlisted crew, the enlisted ranks have existed in some form since the original series. More defined in the film era, particularly under the revision of style and structure in The Wrath of Khan, they have been slightly more prominent since. Most notable of the enlisted members of Starfleet was […]

[Q2&A] Fleet Recognition
While SFC's rank system is one of the most obvious form of rewards within Quadrant 2, with members informally given the rank and title for each grade, rank is just one level of recognition within the fleet for out Captains and Fleet Support to highlight a members contributions. [Q2&A] Orientation: The Officers Hub
In the past ten years we've tried to make a conscious effort to make things easier for members to manage and consult the admin side of Q2. Before the days of the internet, any guides, documents or forms were issued by request and a little harder to come by but now things tend to be found within our online membership portal that's constantly changing and growing based on feedback from across the fleet. Now we try to make things as easy add adaptable as possible, utilising our online home for as many member needs as we can with our key resource online being our Officers Hub. In it's current form the Officers Hub is a catch all place for fleet updates and membership administration, allowing you to make changes, updates or get information about Q2 and it's processes without having […]

[Q2&A] Celebrating Ten Years of the USS Churchill
Commissioned in February 2016 to oversee operations in Southern England and Wales, the USS Churchil is one of two online-centric units created by merging several localised units into one larger region. Throughout 2015-16, SFC was experiencing some fatigue and, to cut it short, needed a bit of a reboot. While there was activity and things were ticking along, the fleet as a whole was in a bit of a rough patch. After a huge fleet wide consultation, we went full Voyager and hit the reset button. Keeping Sovereign active as the 'catch all' unit with a heavy base in the North of England and Ireland, there was enough spark in the South to keep things alive with a new combined 'super-unit', a second online base from which to grow. Using the Sovereign as a template, the USS Churchill was created […]

[Q2&A] Positively Positive.
Last week Starfleet Academy debuted and something odd happened. If you're a regular to any Trek news or discussion site, you noticed a spike. Even our usually sleepy Facebook profile went from a handful of likes to over 2,000, am good chunk of which got deleted. It wasn't a normal spike, certainly not normal for a debut show, not normal to be everywhere and – to be frank – not normal in terms of comments. It was a mix of disturbing and sad. Disturbing for the high amount of bigoted and sexist memes and commentary that seemed to mock murdered US citizens. For a subculture of fandom that grew up praising – to the point of gloating – that Star Trek was about intellectualism and inclusion, it certainly showed that as a fandom, and a united international culture, we've taken more […]

[Meet The Fleet] Academy Interim Commandant
Joining SFC can sometimes be a whirlwind. As part of our Q2&A Updates, we've decided it's time to Meet The Fleet! After introducing our Director of Administration, we're heading to the Academy to meet the person in charge of the new restructure and developments in progress for the fleets training program! Jovak (Jo) Interim Academy Commandant, SFCHQ Service ID: SC-785884-DVP Current Rank: Senior Specialist Enlisted: 78612.63 (August 2024) A relatively new addition to Q2's Fleet Support, Jo joined as part of the Devonport Reserve for inactive members due to having a personal dislike for social media groups but a big fan of the Universe. Working in training in development in the real world they joined the team in a background role to specifically work on new ideas for Academy on a short-term basis to give it a stronger presence heading […]
