Few pieces of tech in science fiction have been as influential or recognisable as Starfleet’s communicators. Essential tech for life in Starfleet, handheld communicators were originally used most commonly with landing parties to communicate with both home base and the rest of the team on the ground, or could be used on board a starship or facility while linked in to the on-board communications network.
In the 22nd and 23rd centuries, the communicators were simple clamshell designs that could be flipped open to make a call home. Appearing first in the original series, the first communicators were designed by prop maker Wah Ming Chang, who developed other tools of the trade for the series, as a sleek and slimline device that looked significantly more advanced than the bulky radio’s and telecoms devices of the 60’s. With a flick of the wrist, the device would open up with a brass grille acting as an antenna during active use.
Eye catching and fairly cool, the flip-design would later inspire Motorola engineer Martin Cooper to replicate the idea, leading to the StarTAC design on mobile phone used released in the mid 90’s.
Revived and redesigned over the years, including a ‘first generation’ bulkier model in prequel series Enterprise and revised models for Discovery and Strange New Worlds, the original communicators of the 1960’s established a core Trek idea: advanced technology should be intuitive, portable, and elegant. A thought that would continue through the next generation of technology….
While the well-designed would be retained through the film franchise, in 1987 we were introduced to the next level of technology. In the real world mobile phones were fast becoming reality. Sure, they were bulky, but after a long development Motorola’s wildly expensive brick of a phone, the DynaTAC, was commercially available for anyone who wanted to drop a small fortune on it. With the original series quickly becoming old hat, the Next Generation came up with a new idea; werable technology.
Merging the ship-board and away team functions of the communicator, the next icon was born; The Comm Badge. Integrated into the uniform, communicators were now a multi-functional device styled into Starfleet’s ‘Delta’ pin. An all in one solution, making a call was just a tap away while also acting as a location tracker, security device and much more with it’s integrated translation software.
The Next Gen era communicator marked a huge shift in how the technology was integrated into daily life. There was no fumbling around or grabbing the device on the way out; it was no longer a cumbersome tool, but an integral part of the uniform that was almost hidden in plain sight.
Again of course, technology leapt forward decades after the commbadge was introduced. On screen we saw a step backwards to the flip-communicator with the Kelvin timeline films re-designing the 23rd century while Discovery brought us prequel level equipment at first, but it’s leap to the far-future showed the next evolution of the compact commbadge.
Condensing even more tech into the wearable device, the tri-comm used in the 32nd century has a motion reactive interface to trigger communications, personal transport signals and acts as a tricorder with heads up display projection. As adaptive devices, communicators went from convenient tools to intelligent, deeply integrated essentials with immediate access to almost everything a good explorer would need on the final frontier.
For all the functional changes and evolution from 1996 to 2026 on screen, the most remarkable aspect of Star Trek’s communicator is how often they’ve inspired real technology. From 1960’s inspired flip phones, to the 90’s ideal of voice-activated assistants and wearable tech, even the modern essential of always-available wireless communication. All concepts echoed from the design of Star Trek’s future.
In that sense, the communicator isn’t just a piece of sci-fi hardware,k it’s a promise. A reminder that no matter how far we travel, staying connected is what truly makes us human.

Inside Trek/Outside Trek: Colm Meaney
To the entire Star Trek Universe, Colm Meaney will forever be remembered as The Chief. Making his first appearance in The Next Generations pilot as a background character, Meaney soon found himself in the rotating guest cast for the Next Generation as the character O'Brien was fleshed out and used to bridge the next spin off when he became part of the core cast of Deep Space Nine. Becoming a favourite as the mild mannered transporter chief, O'Brien solidified his place in Star Trek history in Deep Space Nine thanks to Meaney bringing a grounded, working-class style into the collection of officers and diplomats around him, kicking and cursing at broken down equipment in DS9's pilot episode and continuing to bring the most human character as a father, husband, mentor and overworked fixer of all things. Beyond Star Trek, […]

[For The Uniform] The Pioneers: Mid 22nd Century
Giving us a glimpse of Starfleet's formative years, Star Trek Enterprise embraced a world before colourful uniforms, flashy computer panels and creature comforts all around. Set a century before Captain Kirk's five year mission and focused on the first line of Starfleet ships built to take on the final frontier, the show focused on Starfleet's first steps into becoming what we all knew and loved.... Offering a dramatic shift in visual identity, Enterprise took a massive step back from the comfortable styles of the Next Generation, and even further away from the colour coded optimism of the original series. Instead of bold colours and hidden zips, designer Robert Blackman took inspiration from his own century, using Enterprise's timeline to bridge the style gap between Kirk's era and our own.Taking inspiration from NASA's flight suits, Starfleet's were idealised as the next […]

That Guy From That Thing: Harris Yulin
Among the many acclaimed guest appearances from all corners of the Star Trek Universe, there are only a small few who gave as deep a performance as Harris Yulin in his sole appearance in the franchise. Taking the spotlight as Aamin Marritza in Deep Space Nine's first season episode Duet, a Cardassian civilian who arrives at Deep Space Nine and raises a massive red flag for Kira when she learns he has a condition that links him to a brutal mining camp that many Bajorans suffered through during the occupation. Yulin is an actor who you may not recognise by name, but you always recognise. Having made his name in the New York theatre scene in the 60's, he quickly established himself as a serious dramatic talent with an incredible command of language, subtly and presence before he'd ever step […]

[Treknology] The Holodeck
An immersive experience in itself, the Holodeck is one of the many creature comforts that help bring comfort and entertainment within the life of a starship years from home that not only acts in creating a live action gaming environment, but as a useful tool for educational simulations, experiments and the occasional Hirogen nightmare! The holodeck is a complex device. Essentially a simulated environment generator, the holodeck is usually a vast room that used a combination of forcefields, matter replication and visually manipulative holographic systems to create an immersive environment that one or multiple people can use to not only see and hear, but physically interact with. Able to replicate anything from historical settings to an entirely original landscape, the holodeck ios Knightmare in ultra high resolution without a headset or guide, but a physical interaction with a created world […]

[Treknology] Warp Me! Inside the Engine Room.
For sixty years now the 'Space... the final frontier...' speech is engrained in the minds of half the planet. Even if they've only seen an SNL parody of Star Trek, they know what it means and where it came from. Within the world of Star Trek, there's no exploring the final frontier without one vital component – another piece of the Trek lexicon that's synonymous with it's universe – warp drive. Invented by Zephram Cochrane following the third world war, warp drive was a revolution of space flight. Scraping the pieces together in a battered rural town in Montana, Cochrane used an abandoned missile silo to launch his test ship, the Phoenix, turning a relic of war into a symbol of hope. Maybe not on purpose. His revolution was built for fame and glory. But the day he launched his […]
