Right now it’s all Strange New Worlds on Paramount Plus and a bit of a wait until Starfleet Academy opens it’s doors for their debut season early next year, but it’s SDCC weekend so the team behind the Discovery spin off is ready with a sneak peek courtesy of their panel in the legendary Hall H and collaboration with Entertainment Weekly.
Set to continue the adventures started by the Discovery crew in the 32nd century, Starfleet Academy is based on a group of cadets training under the first class since the reopening of the Earth-based facility following Earth’s return to the Federation after seceding during ‘The Burn’. Inviting the best and brightest from across the galaxy, the young crew learn from a team of highly skilled and experienced instructors to learn what it takes to carry the weight of the future as a Starfleet Officer.
The first look teaser gives a quick introduction to the new stars including Bella Shepard, Karim Diane, George Hawkins, Gina Yashir, Kerrice Brooks and Sandro Rosta – as they begin their Starfleet journey at the Academy and it’s travelling starship of a classroom – the USS Athena.
The trailer was launched alongside the Star Trek Universe Panel at SDCC and released worldwide on Paramount Plus’ YouTube Channel.
Entertainment Weekly gave us a closer look with exclusive production stills from the new series…
While we knew a little about the show – from producer Alex Kurtzman dropping tonal hints to it having the largest set Star Trek has ever seen – the first look images and teaser give us a fascinating first look at the new series and it’s setting. Between the images and teaser, we can see there’s a lot to introduce with the Academy setting paying tribute to the lessons of the past while setting the stage for new adventures in a rebuilding phase for Starfleet’s adventures.
We also get a peek at some of the non-Cadets within the cast, including Holly Hunter in the captains chair and Paul Giamatti as the series bad guy! The return of Robert Picardo, Oded Fehr and Tig Notaro also give a look at the recurring cast coming back to mentor the future officers.
Described as a show designed to introducer viewers to the cadets who come together for the common goal of hope and adventure, the series will begin with an episode written by Gaia Violo and directed by Alex Kurtzman.
Starfleet Academy is set to launch in 2026 with a second season already underway.

Behind the Viewscreen: Jerry Goldsmith
Across a long career writing music for some of Hollywoods most celebrated films, Jerry Goldsmith's mark can be heard in a huge range of genre's from The Omen, to LA Confidential, from Patton to Planet of the Apes. But even when it comes to his science fiction scores including Alien and Total Recall, none have left as iconic a mark as his contributions to Star Trek. During the reinvention of Star Trek for cinema, director Robert Wise knew the challenge. Turn a small sci fi show into a cinematic epic. The success of that has often came up for debate, but no matter the opinion on the Motion Picture, the one celebrated element was the music Goldsmith delivered and the new template he build for the sound of Star Trek. Blending classic orchestra with electronic synthesizers and complex rhythmic patterns, […]

[Treknology] Tea On Demand. The Replicator.
Trekking across the universe needs powerful engines to traverse the vastness of the Galaxy, devastating weapons to survive perilous territory, and all the trinkets to explore every inch of the unknown while making new friends among new civilisations. But the future Star Trek creates isn't just shaped by the tools of the trade for Starfleet and it's various allies and enemies. Some of the more incredibly technologies come from the mundane day to day necessities. Unlike a lot of Trek tech, the Replicator took a while to develop. In the original series food synthesisers were a simple hole in the wall system. Put a card in, open the door and it's dinner time! By the time the Next Generation took over, the hole in the wall had a more appealing visual look and functions that would carry through nearly every […]

Inside Trek/Outside Trek: Colm Meaney
To the entire Star Trek Universe, Colm Meaney will forever be remembered as The Chief. Making his first appearance in The Next Generations pilot as a background character, Meaney soon found himself in the rotating guest cast for the Next Generation as the character O'Brien was fleshed out and used to bridge the next spin off when he became part of the core cast of Deep Space Nine. Becoming a favourite as the mild mannered transporter chief, O'Brien solidified his place in Star Trek history in Deep Space Nine thanks to Meaney bringing a grounded, working-class style into the collection of officers and diplomats around him, kicking and cursing at broken down equipment in DS9's pilot episode and continuing to bring the most human character as a father, husband, mentor and overworked fixer of all things. Beyond Star Trek, […]

[For The Uniform] The Pioneers: Mid 22nd Century
Giving us a glimpse of Starfleet's formative years, Star Trek Enterprise embraced a world before colourful uniforms, flashy computer panels and creature comforts all around. Set a century before Captain Kirk's five year mission and focused on the first line of Starfleet ships built to take on the final frontier, the show focused on Starfleet's first steps into becoming what we all knew and loved.... Offering a dramatic shift in visual identity, Enterprise took a massive step back from the comfortable styles of the Next Generation, and even further away from the colour coded optimism of the original series. Instead of bold colours and hidden zips, designer Robert Blackman took inspiration from his own century, using Enterprise's timeline to bridge the style gap between Kirk's era and our own.Taking inspiration from NASA's flight suits, Starfleet's were idealised as the next […]

Starfleet Academy to end with with Season 2
Announced first by Variety, it's been announced that Starfleet Academy will end with Season 2. Having just launches in January with the first season finale receiving positive reactions, and it's second season now in post-production following the completion of filming, the announcement comes at an unsurprising time with Paramount undergoing new ownership under Skydance and more business shenanigans with further consolidation in the works with plans to absorb Warner Brothers into the mix. Set in the 32nd century and using Discovery's season 3 'Burn' storyline as a reset point, Starfleet Academy was focused on new original characters who had signed up to be the new stewards of Starfleet's future to rebuild the strength and vision of the Federation. Opening strong, Academy improved throughout it's first season and used it's setting to help strengthen the hopeful vision of the future and […]

New Cast Welcomes Aboard for Season 5 of Strange New Worlds
As the media hype is starting to ramp up for Academy's debut, Strange New Worlds is adding the finishing touches and along with cast such as Anson Mount saying goodbye to their Enterprise, we have some new names announced to have joined for the final season. Acting as a prequel to the original series, Strange New Worlds has helped to expand legacy characters having brought over Ethan Peck's younger and less refined version of Spock, the first career steps of Nyota Uhura, a completely revamped Christine Chapel and smaller parts – such as Dr M'BEnga, Samuel Kirk and T'Pring among others – being revived for the new era. Since then we've also spent some time with a young Jim Kirk, even seeing his first time in command last season, and Scotty's joined the lower decks of Engineering. As the show […]

Across The Universe This November!
As the year comes to an end, the new cycles are spinning up as Star Trek looks ahead towards new frontiers... UNDER CONSTRUCTION.... AGAIN... It's safe to say the biggest news of December had all eyes back on the film side of the Star Trek franchise again as Paramount seems to have found a new plan to revive Trek on the big screen. Which, sure, comes with a lot of scepticism. We've already had the Tarantino plan, the Kelvin revival announcement, the Hawley film that went into pre production before another announcement and probably more that we've forgotten about. But this one comes from the all new Paramount under Skydance, so lets be cautiously hopeful! According to Deadline the new pitch is coming from Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley who will write and direct a completely new take on […]

Revisiting the Past and Rebuilding The Future: Across the Universe this August
As Strange New Worlds races through it's third season, Star Trek looks ahead to new frontiers with it's home studio under new management and new games on the horizon. Meanwhile a little drop of Trek history gets a huge expansion. New Owners, New Changes The biggest news for the month came not just across the Star Trek Universe, but the media industry as after a long tussle with some odd political turns, Paramount is finally under new ownership. Merging with the media giant Skydance, the new Paramount means many things. For tus, it basically just means we might have some movement on Trek news going forward after a massive pause in business operations while all the legalities were ironed out. A new Paramount means a new executive line up under the command of Skydance boss David Ellison who is not […]
