As the year comes to an end, the new cycles are spinning up as Star Trek looks ahead towards new frontiers…
UNDER CONSTRUCTION…. AGAIN…
It’s safe to say the biggest news of December had all eyes back on the film side of the Star Trek franchise again as Paramount seems to have found a new plan to revive Trek on the big screen. Which, sure, comes with a lot of scepticism. We’ve already had the Tarantino plan, the Kelvin revival announcement, the Hawley film that went into pre production before another announcement and probably more that we’ve forgotten about. But this one comes from the all new Paramount under Skydance, so lets be cautiously hopeful!
According to Deadline the new pitch is coming from Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley who will write and direct a completely new take on Star Trek, though were unable to verify what that take was. However it was noted that it doesn’t look like another reboot, timeline or prequel with a new set of characters to be introduced.
The new team producing under the banner GoldDay, have previously worked on the 2023 Dungeons and Dragons film starring Chris Pine for Paramount and more recently worked on Ryan Reynolds-led Mayday for Apple under the Skydance banner. They are likely best known for writing the screenplay for Sony’s Spider-Man Homecoming in 2017.
I know. I know. We’ve heard it all before. Since the TV/Streaming revival, Star Trek’s film branch just seems to be a billion projects going nowhere at warp speed. But we’ll stay cautiously optimistic. With new owners and new plans for Paramount overall, and a seemingly definitive plan to end the Kelvin Timeline era and start anew, the studio is firm on Star Trek being part of it’s revived and renewed film program and with it being a true and tested property, Skydance will want to make sure they get it right out of the gate. Especially with great expectations following Skydance’s involvement in the 2009 series.
ON THE SMALL SCREEN…
While we might not hear about the film franchise for a little while, more information has been dropping this month for Starfleet Academy ahead of it’s launch next year including Collider revealing that The OA’s Brit Marling will take on the vocal role of the USS Athena’s computer systems. Marling will be joined by The Late Show’s John Colbert in being part of the extended vocal cast which was revealed at New York Comic Con in October.
Director Jonathon Frakes also spoke to TrekMovie revealing the shows levity and some insight to the cast including how well Paul Giamatti was integrating into the Star Trek Universe! You can read the full interview here.
INFECTING BEYOND THE UNIVERSE
In the extended gaming branch of the Star Trek Universe, we learned a little more about one of the upcoming games – Star Trek Infected – through a Reddit AMA. Throughout the Developers of the game answered questions on what to expect and how they put together the licensed game.
Meanwhile ongoing popular games were still on form with the Starfleet Command strategy game adding some new content including a new mega event featuring event and bonus crew form Strange New Worlds third season, including Roger Korby and the slightly disturbing Vulcan Uhura.
In the MMO world Star Trek Online followed up their Halloween event that unlocked a zombie red shirt reward with a chance to unlock the bone drinking Moopsy as a combat pet. And it won’t be long now until Q is back with his Winter Wonderland and the Snowconian assault!

Time has certainly flown by as Strange New Worlds penultimate season is just days away. Things have been a little guarded since the show was announced to be ending with a shortened 5th season, but it gave the production plenty of warning to wrap things up and bring an end to the original Captain and his crew! Starfleet Academy to end with with Season 2
Announced first by Variety, it's been announced that Starfleet Academy will end with Season 2. Having just launches in January with the first season finale receiving positive reactions, and it's second season now in post-production following the completion of filming, the announcement comes at an unsurprising time with Paramount undergoing new ownership under Skydance and more business shenanigans with further consolidation in the works with plans to absorb Warner Brothers into the mix. New Cast Welcomes Aboard for Season 5 of Strange New Worlds
As the media hype is starting to ramp up for Academy's debut, Strange New Worlds is adding the finishing touches and along with cast such as Anson Mount saying goodbye to their Enterprise, we have some new names announced to have joined for the final season.
