Every Star Trek fans dreams of being the captain of their own Starship and within Q2’s network, everyone within the fleet has their chance. Sure, we can’t give you a real starship, and you likely won’t have to deal with long haul trips to the Hromi Cluster to pick up a gas sample, or deal with random attacks from the Tzenkethi. You don’t even get a real chair. But you can be part of the leadership within the club and join the many who have helped shape our direction.
Unit’s are, and always will be, the core of SFC. It is within them that members can indulge in their shared interests for Star Trek and science fiction while enjoying the company of fellow fans and like minded people. At their best, units are a unique and welcoming social group that can be as rewarding as they are challenging.
Being the one to lead that group or take the reigns can be a little daunting. We might not be a real fleet with real ships, but being a Captain with Q2 is a leadership role that carries it’s own responsibilities. As CO you will become a respected representative of SFCQ2 and have a varied group of members to work and coordinate with which can come with a variety of unexpected challenges. Finding the reach and membership can also be a chore, as well as building infrastructure and a core base to start from. This is where our Fleet Developmental Officer comes in.
Working directly with the Director of Fleet Administration and Captains Table, the Development Officer’s primary role it to promote and support the evolution of Q2’s Next Generation. Identifying and profiling key regions, the development officer would work to ensure areas with a need or desire to expand into new units and groups within Q2 would receive all the help and support that can get whilst promoting the benefits of localised regional units across the UK and wider Europe.
Identifying and supporting prospective CO’s, the Development Officer would also look at generating interest and exploring new opportunities for Q2’s next generation of leaders.
Announced for the role earlier this year, our development officer is a veteran of Q2 with a range f advice and experience to offer. Having brought structure and new ideas in his tenure as Sovereign’s CO, Piers Drinkall has always shown a balanced and fair view in leadership.
Building on his real-life experience and career progression, he has become one of the most consistent and creative people within Q2 when it comes to operational performance, not just as a unit leader, but in his ability to offer support to the board. Having already joined Fleet Support in November 2024, Piers has already been entrusted with one of he most valued positions in the new support layout, and with his eagerness to bring more to the table combined with his innovative and forward thinking mindset, a further advancement to Development Officer was the logical conclusion.
With a heavily experienced person on the role, those who feel they want to step up to the challenge of building their own base within Q2 can seek help and guidance on structuring their new unit following application, or take part in one of the hosted Command Training courses led by Piers who can, in turn, coordinate with Admin to help bring a new core of members and build internal tools and supports needed to give your unit the best start!
All members who have completed their ‘Cadet Term’ are welcome to propose their own unit startup. Qualifying members are advised to read and understand the policies and structure in place for units in the Membership Handbook and supporting materials available within the Fleet Database of Membership Hub downloads.
You can find out more on Piers and Fleet Development in our Officers Hub Alerts, or begin your journey today with our New Unit Application.
